Exposed Vocals: Emilie, your new single “Cherry Haze” is right around the corner — can you tell us what inspired the song and what it represents for you as an artist?
Emilie Culshaw: It is! I’m so excited! The song is inspired by the feeling of realizing you’re catching feelings for someone. It represents happiness for me, as it’s about finding love and trusting someone in that way, which I think is a rare thing.
Exposed Vocals: What was the creative process like for “Cherry Haze”? Did the lyrics, melody, or mood come first?
Emilie: The mood came first, I knew what I wanted to write about. Then came the melody, and finally the lyrics. The song went through a lot lyrically — it had multiple versions before the final one was decided on, as I wanted it to be as perfect as it could be. This song is a special one.
Exposed Vocals: How would you describe your sound to someone hearing your music for the first time?
Emilie: A few words I’d use to describe my music are emotional, haunting, romantic, dark, dreamy, and angelic. It’s pop, inspired by the likes of Lana Del Rey, Madison Beer, Sabrina Carpenter, and Olivia Rodrigo!
Exposed Vocals: What’s the story behind your journey with Big Condo Records? How has being part of that label influenced your music and growth?
Emilie: Over the past year, being signed to Big Condo Records has helped me build my confidence and skills as an artist and bring my true creative vision to life, which I’m so grateful for. I appreciate them and their support so much. I definitely wouldn’t be here right now if it wasn’t for them. Big love to the whole team — they’re like family to me!
Exposed Vocals: Who are some of your biggest musical influences, and how have they shaped your style?
Emilie: I love Lana Del Rey because of her storytelling style and dark, emotive records — especially “Dark Paradise” and “West Coast.” Those tracks are absolutely beautiful. I also love Lady Gaga because her music speaks to me, and she’s so expressive with her performances and style.
Exposed Vocals: Are there any themes or emotions you consistently try to explore through your songwriting?
Emilie: My songwriting is always very personal. I write a lot from pain and true life experiences. Music is a way I can express myself and communicate. Being honest and authentic is really important to me in my music.
Exposed Vocals: What does your typical studio or writing session look like — are you someone who writes solo or collaborates often?
Emilie: A bit of both, really. I like to write my music in my room on my own, then bring demos into the studio to be recorded. Sometimes new lyrics are added when recording with the team — it depends on the song and what it needs to sound the best it can! Most of the time, my songs start off written solo.
Exposed Vocals: With “Cherry Haze” releasing on November 23rd, what do you hope listeners take away from the track?
Emilie: I really hope listeners want to dance when they hear the song, both live and electronically. It’s definitely one of my favorite songs I’ve ever written. I’m so proud of it. Performing it is my favorite thing ever!
Exposed Vocals: Can fans expect more music following this single? Perhaps an EP or upcoming live performances?
Emilie: So many plans that I can’t wait to share! Next year is going to be huge — expect an EP… maybe a tour! I can’t say too much, so I’ll leave it there. But I’m very excited for everything.
Exposed Vocals: Lastly, what’s one thing fans might not know about you — musically or personally — that you’d love to share?
Emilie: Something people never really expect from me is the music I love listening to! I love pop music, but I also love a lot of rock, soul, and folk too. My playlist is completely random — it’ll go from Becky Hill to The Beatles to Doja Cat to Billy Joel, haha. Thank you so much for these questions! To follow me on social media, my username is @emilieculshaw, and tickets to the Cherry Haze single release party are available now on Skiddle! See you there 🙂

Big love to my label Big Condo Records and my manager and mentor Royzy Rothschild.
