In this story

Frenchie, the Brick Squad Monopoly affiliate and owner of Protekted Records, teamed up again with Chanel West Coast for “Project X,” an EDM-meets-hip-hop track. The Rive Video Promotion campaign quoted The Hype Magazine on the result: a strong Detroit sound, and a Frenchie who “holds nothing back.”

A 14-hour party

The video was shot at the Elektricity nightclub in Pontiac, Michigan, in a shoot that ran more than 14 hours, with a drone hovering over a club full of extras. “It’s a party song,” Chanel said between takes, “so it’s basically one big party.” Produced by 19-year-old Metro Detroit producer Skyler “SKYrise” Kallabat and directed by Gerard Victor, whose videos include Black Milk and Fabolous, it is the pair’s second collaboration after B.o.B’s “Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere.”

From South Jamaica, Queens

Greg “Frenchie” Hogan, an original Brick Squad member, made the mixtapes Long Overdue and The Concrete Jungle and the EP Fukk Fame. “To be honest, I grew up around a lot of ignorance,” Frenchie says. “The older people that I looked up to, they were jackers; robbers. I was a part of it, too; but I always wanted more.”

Why it was in the inbox

A Queens rapper on a Detroit EDM beat with a reality-TV star should not work this well. “Project X” is a party that knows it.
