In this story

“Clyde Carson does not wait for opportunity; he creates it,” the Rive Video Promotion campaign for “Let’s Get It” begins. The Oakland rapper and entrepreneur is best known as frontman of The Team, whose 2004 radio hit “It’s Gettin’ Hot” lit up switchboards, and as the creator of the Hyphy Juice energy drink and a partner in Moe Doe Records.

Party music in a violent era

Raised in the era of mob music in the Bay Area, Carson pushed party music when the content was all violence, and became one of the biggest figures of the Hyphy Movement that brought the region back into the national spotlight. “My main goal was to make music with an Oakland element to it, but on a national level,” Carson explains. After a stint in New York soaking up the mixtape hustle, Carson formed The Team in 2002 with Mayne Mannish, Jungle and Kaz Kyzah.

Something to speak about

The solo career picked up in 2012 with the S.T.S.A. (Something to Speak About) mixtape, the “Slow Down” single a year later and the 2014 Playboy EP with Master P. “Let’s Get It” comes from the follow-up, STSA II.

Why it was in the inbox

A decade after Hyphy, Carson was still making records built to get a room moving. “Let’s Get It” is a title and an instruction.
