Found in the Inbox: SHEL Wave the Indie Banner on “You Could Be My Baby”
In this story
SHEL is sisters Eva, Hannah, Sarah and Liza Holbrook, raised in an art-loving family in Fort Collins, Colorado, each a classically trained player of violin, mandolin, piano or drums. The Rive Video Promotion campaign for “You Could Be My Baby” presents their second album, Just Crazy Enough, as both familiar and far-out: the glowing harmonies are there, now with electronic ambience and beatboxing.
Proudly indie
“We’ve always made our living playing music,” Sarah Holbrook says. “I dropped out of two different colleges, before it finally sank in that I was supposed to be playing music with my sisters full time. We signed with Republic Records early on, but escaped the ‘artist protection program’ and we’re prouder than ever to be waving our indie banner.”
Nashville, then Dave Stewart
The sisters recorded in Nashville with longtime producer Brent Maher, then Eurythmics co-founder Dave Stewart, whose credits include Stevie Nicks, Joss Stone and Ringo Starr, sculpted sounds and beats in Los Angeles while keeping the acoustic heart of the songs. “We were all instrumentalists long before we learned to sing,” Hannah Holbrook says. “Sharing these songs has shown us we’re not alone,” Eva adds.
Why it was in the inbox
Four sisters, four instruments and one voice. “You Could Be My Baby” shows why they did not need a major label to sound this big.
