Found in the Inbox: Paul Hill and George Clinton Don’t Care About “Ur Thoughts”
In this story
“Ur Thoughts,” the Rive Video Promotion campaign says, is an anthem for anyone who does not care what the sideliners think of their lifestyle. Live and let live is the message, told in an upbeat, colorful video, and Paul Hill brought mentor George Clinton along to deliver it.
Detroit soul
Paul Hill was born and raised in Detroit, where a love for true soul music came from the late Carolyn A. Hill, Paul’s mother. From age 7 the original Motown sound shaped the style, alongside R&B, jazz, funk and ballads and crooners from Al Green and Frank Sinatra to Marvin Gaye, with flair from Stevie Wonder, Parliament Funkadelic and The Beatles.
From the barbershop to P-Funk
Like Clinton, Paul started as a barber and hair stylist, funding music from the barbershop, and went on to become a card-carrying member of the P-Funk All Stars, appearing on How Late Do U Have 2 BB4 UR Absent, Gangsters of Love and more. Solo and with P-Funk, the campaign says, Paul has shared stages with Beyoncé, John Legend, Kanye West, Alicia Keys, Prince, Erykah Badu, D’Angelo, Sly Stone, Whitney Houston and James Brown, and helped launch the Grammy-winning production team The Funktwons by bringing them to Dallas Austin’s D.A.R.P.
Why it was in the inbox
Few singers get to make a funk record with the man who wrote the rules. “Ur Thoughts” sounds like they had fun doing it.
