Found in the Inbox: Coastgaard Play “A Well Adjusted Man” With Vintage Rock Instincts
In this story
The Rive Video Promotion campaign for “A Well Adjusted Man” describes Coastgaard’s music as timeless: it plays to nostalgia but still feels fresh. On the sophomore album Devil on the Balcony, the band set dynamic chord progressions over rhythmic motifs that recall 50s and 60s rock and roll.
Merging what does not seem to fit
Vintage and modern, order and chaos: the campaign says Coastgaard’s niche is making things that do not immediately seem compatible into something beautiful. The band is Matt Miller on guitar and lead vocals, Sean Glassman on guitar, vocals and keys, Paolo Codega on bass and vocals, and Brian D’Alessandro on drums, vocals and keys.
Live instruments, on purpose
The album doubles down on live instrumentation. According to the band, there is a “certain level of flexibility that cannot be duplicated using electronic elements in music,” and that flexibility is what lets the songs move between emotional ranges.
Why it was in the inbox
“A Well Adjusted Man” is retro without being a costume, a band using old shapes to say something current.
