‘Run Up A Check’ has a pretty effective bass line and beat that takes a little inspiration from classic hip-hop and the more electronically sourced modern side of the genre. Hugh Heff has a certain vocal rhythm or flow that remains consistent throughout his music. This, combined with the accompanying video, showcases a no-holds-barred sense of character. There’s also a distinct and unwavering level of urgency and passion to his performance, the sound lies far from the mellow, partly whispered or spoken-word style of hip-hop, but more accurately it offers a high level of energy without fail from start to finish.
The song’s hook is the main thing you take away from it, that and the weight of the bass line. The track opens and ends with that title lyric, repeating it fairly continuously throughout the track. The effect of this is that you remember it, the line and the rhythm of its presentation fit the backdrop and stay with you after listening – audiences are likely to recognise the track for this key characteristic alone after hearing it even just once. However, the constant inclusion of it does take something away from the story line or extended sentiment of the song. The verses hit with less impact as their rhythm and volume are so similar to the hook; all you really remember from the experience is that hook.
