Found in the Inbox: Chelsea Dash Brings a Four-Octave Voice to “Take A Picture”
In this story
Chelsea Dash’s career, as Rive Video Promotion told it, started with a near-expulsion. In preschool, asked to bring something for show and tell, she sang her own version of Madonna’s “Like a Virgin,” “much to the scandal of her peers and teachers.” The campaign for “Take A Picture” used that story to introduce a singer who had since traded classrooms for some of the biggest stages in the country.
From Berklee to arenas
According to the release, Dash is a graduate of Berklee College of Music with a four-octave voice. She writes all of her own material and plays guitar. Her performance list ranged from the White House to the Staples Center, Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center and the Palace of Fine Arts in San Francisco, and she had sung for the Golden State Warriors, Lakers, Clippers, Knicks and Nets, as well as the San Francisco Giants and Los Angeles Dodgers. She also played her original songs in bars and clubs in New York and Los Angeles.
A pop record with a co-writer’s pedigree
The campaign says Dash’s first single was co-written with multi-platinum songwriter and producer Chris Rojas, whose credits include the Backstreet Boys, Pink and Jessica Simpson, and that it drew attention from Sony Columbia Records. She had been featured by PureVolume, ArtistDirect and The Huffington Post, and the release calls her the “Badass Barbie Doll of pop.” “Take A Picture” came out on Sea Waves Music with her EP Dangerous due later that year, and the notes promise “thick beats, sassy lyrics and catchy pop hooks.”
Why it was in the inbox
“Take A Picture” introduced a songwriter whose path ran through Berklee, arena events and late-night club sets, and whose sense of humor showed up long before the music industry did.
