EV: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Doctrinn was born and raised on the city streets of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where the most eccentric people come from. First Andy Worhol, then Jeff Goldblum, then Wiz Kalifa, and now Doctrinn, Pittsburgh is a very eclectic place to be raised in. All the while, music (Rock/Hip Hop/R&B/Pop) played key roles in his everyday life. At the age of 18 he moved to Tennessee and quickly discovered, fell in love with, and became en-downed in K-pop (South Korean Pop & Hip Hop). which was imputes to his musical career. With the example of K-pop idols proving intrepid enough to stand out and be different, it inspired him to take action in standing out, even more so as a Christian. Observing the talents produced by several South Korean entertainment companies, and the unique self-expressions they brought through song and video, Doctrinn was inspired to create a Christian Entertainment company that wouldn't hold down Christians to the conservative stereotypes that most church's only accept; a place where Christian artists can be themselves and be as different as they desired. He launched his Christian label in 2012 named Final Reflect Entertainment. Simultaneously, he developed the desire to create his own music of the CHH/CR&B variety in an unbound, unchecked manner that most Christian artists wouldn't think of. As it is safe to say K-pop played a major key factor in his interest as an artist and style. Moreover, with the style of American music that we was raised with, mixed with the heavy influence of k-pop, he has been known to stick out not only with look and sound, but within several Genres.
EV: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
NEVER be afraid to be different. Desire to stick out and make an impact with your audience. Make national/international connections and friends and stay on good standing with everyone. Always be up for collaborations. Make a free email-mailing list to send news letters monthly or simi-monthly. Remember: If you want more people to shake your hand, you have to shake more people's hands. So if you want more people to support, promote and share your music, you have to support, promote, and share other's music. ESPECIALLY indie artists. Never be afraid to support and work with people who are smaller than you. One day they may take a major leap ahead of you and if you acted like a diva to them, then why will not want to work with you. (What goes around comes back around).
EV: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
When performing mistakes are always made; no such thing as a perfect performance. Within my genre of music, if I were to make a mistake i would have hype-men (Or back up singers for singers) to catch the mistake and being the song back to speed. In addition, its always good to have backup vocals and adlibs on the live played track so if you miss something they help get you back in place. Extra experience: I've seen people make mistakes in their own lyrics live and they just got quiet and did a small dance (The dance was a part of the choreography anyway) and miss a line or two. At the top of the next bar they came back into thee swing of the song. So it looked as if the vocal break and dance were choreographed in that exact way. So, a choreography could prove advantageous. As for rock/metal bands: Its good to have other band mates singe in certain parts, but if you mess up in lyrics then you can always plan to break into a guitar solo or INST merge. Also dancing is never a bad move in performing. Piano: if you mess up a few notes in a piano while single, make a dramatic stop in the piano and keep singing. It could work out to look like dramatic pause for the live version.
EV: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
As with all acts under Final Reflect Entertainment, Doctrinn is promoted via FB, IG, Twitter, an abundance of radio networks (Airplay) especially the free, independent networks, as well as licensed networks (Licensed pay out royelties so make sure to be registered with a PRO (Performance Rights Organizations)) Email subscribers re always a good way to promote upcoming releases, events, merch, etc Before every release, especially singles, post at least 3-7 flyers promoting the release as "COMING SOON." Music video teasers, and still pic audio teasers in video format on youtube, FB, IG and twitter gives people a taste of whats the come and makes them want more. Make FB events to ALL your event including interviews, appearances, performances, release parties, etc..
EV: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
I would perform at Inkigayo for the Mnet Music Awards with a combination or solo with: HeeSun Lee, BIGBANG, JYJ, and Lee Hyori. Those are some of the many, many acts i listen to, however these musical acts have had a major impact on my musical career and inspire me to continue in my craft.
EV: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
In 2017, Doctrinn made a surprising comeback from a year-long hiatus with a new single called 'Abba Don't Cry.' Subsequently, that following December he released 'I Can't Breathe ft Ver'Na', which also let to his first single of 2018 called 'We Made It ft Brandon Shane, TYGHE, UnveileD, PLAP.' On April 4, 2018, he will release yet another hit single called 'So So Long,' which is described by Kingdom Hip Hop's review board as "A son that brings a new sound to this brand of hip hop." Doctrinn Anticipates the release of two to four more standalone singles before his up coming album R2R, which is to be released in August. This will be his 3rd album (2nd regular album) since his last album in 2015 (Mini album called "Eclipse"), and his first album in 2014 (Regular album called "Its Only The Beginning") Upon the release of the R2R album in August 2018, Doctrinn will be touring and will keep open spots for new, unscheduled locations.
EV: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
If I wasn't focused on music, I would probably be running my own restaurant, as well ad becoming a novelist and working on creating my own fashion line. I intend on doing thees things and more as my career continues, but I would be focused specifically on these endeavors alone without making music.
EV: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
Within the next year, Doctrinn will release 'Prelude singles' leading up to his August album R2R, a new Halloween single, and a Christmas single album. Upon album release, Doctrinn will be available for booking before, during, and after his R2R tour. Several Collaboration will be released, as well, with him as the featured artist, and the first line of MERCH will be available. In addition to currently being an online TV host, he will be hosting and participating in several musical video shows.
