In this story

Boonie the Kid was the middle child of five, born in the projects to parents struggling with addiction. The Rive Video Promotion campaign for “Few Levels Higher” is direct about what came after: odd jobs and petty crimes to bring money into the house, deeper involvement in the streets after a move to Homewood in Pittsburgh at eleven, time in juvenile detention and later in adult facilities.

Turning loss into motivation

Having been a victim of gun violence and lost many friends and relatives to it, Boonie uses those experiences and that upbringing as motivation for the music. The writing started early: a first R&B song at nine, a first rap song at eleven.

“Songs,” not noise

Asked about style, Boonie uses four words: streetwise, flashy, struggle and lyrical. The campaign stresses range, too, and an ear for production, with the goal of making real songs rather than rapping over a beat for the sake of noise. After the 2013 CD Raising the Bar, the projects in progress were the album A Few Levels Higher and the EP The Intro, with five of its singles.

Why it was in the inbox

“Few Levels Higher” is a title that doubles as a progress report from someone who started a long way down.
