This is a stunning recording, beautifully soulful from the first moment, the immediate instrumental guitars and notes that open everything up are mesmerizing, and then at every turn afterwards something unexpected occurs. Straight away there’s a sense of free flowing art and emotion, with a beautifully crafted backdrop, wonderful vocal performances, and just masses and masses of creativity and passion.
The song develops into one with a momentarily thick and energetic beat, rhythmically evolving consistently, with pauses and space in between to really mix things up. At times the instrumental backdrop has a hint of vintage synths in there, reminding listeners perhaps of some very early r&b records, and yet at other times there’s nothing to compare it to at all. The instruments have a greatly original sound to them, particularly in the setting of a melodic and emotional ballad, and so it really causes you to focus on each moment intently as it passes by – the after effect of which is a likely desire to listen to the song one more time.
The unusually free nature of the beat is a big part of what makes the song stand out. Still, there has to be more than this to maintain that connection once you have an audience’s attention. I think the vocal performance and the occasional harmonies that back it up have more than enough power to do this. The leading voice is soft when it needs to be, and striking when things change. The talent is there and it’s clear, as is the creativity, and the passion. Lyrically there’s a lot to relate to about the song, and it’s believable. As you listen further you’ll also notice a well thought out effort in production, so really everything is as it needs to be.
