What is the definition of “Hood Oprah” rap/ hip hop? Two words, Young Skrilla
…also known as Street Sweepa and Skrilla . Young Skrilla is a 24 year old artist residing in the state of Wisconsin. Originally from Rota, Spain, but raised in many parts of the U.S. from the east coast to the mid west. This young artist has started to make his way through the game. With every track released, Skrilla brings a powerful sound to each and every beat. Young Skrilla is known to bring a more reality and situation type vibe to tracks, in which many people young and old that’s been through struggles can relate to easily. Although he sometimes brings a mainstream vibe, he is recognized as an artist with caliber and “weird ideas“. Still at the young age of 24, Skrilla has many bright years ahead of him as an artist. As of now, Skrilla has been working on numerous projects, tracks, and collabs to help further his career. ” Keep your eyes open and focused” is all that can be said as of now, Skrilla is ready to blow, and is here to stay for a while…
Young Skrilla first started out recording in his small computer room right next to his bedroom. He didn’t have money to start out so he used what he could. Young Skrilla used a Wal-Mart microphone, Cool Edit Pro 2.0 and I-pod headphones. Skrilla has always wrote his own rhymes, but he was also open for ideas and constructive criticism. When Skrilla finished his “seven song” album/demo, he sold his music around his middle school, ( Brunswick Middle School )and the students and teachers loved it. After he felt comfortable, he went to his friend and asked her to give a demo to her mother. ( $krilla’s friend mother worked for Jive Records. ) When her mother listened to the demo, she felt that he was very talented, but he just wasn’t ready to be signed.
Young Skrilla has been in the publics eye in several ways. Skrilla is a very intelligent artist from music to inventing things. Skrilla , in seventh grade was in the news paper for a science project that no one has made. The project title was named by his mother Marie Martin. The name of the project was named “Raview Persona”, which was a luxurious purse for women. He tried to patent his idea, but it didn’t work.
Skrilla always figured that he was good at poems. When people started admiring his poems, he started to write hit songs. When he wrote and recorded his songs, again, he started selling his albums around school and made profit. Not too long ago Skrilla was on Wisconsin’s local chanel performing live on a t.v. show named “Who Wants To Be A Star?”…. Young Skrilla is starting to blow up, and again, he’s going to be here for a while…..”
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
Skrilla: Honestly, as I was promoting my new single “OPTIONS” on twitter, face book and other platforms, I was contacted by one of your staff (Exposed Vocals). I did a bit of basic research and I seen the huge following which also indicated that you are legit.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Skrilla: Well, where I’m from and where I grew up is a bit of an interesting situation. I was actually Born in Rota, Spain and I moved to the USA when I was just about 8 months. The first state I lived in when I came to America was Florida, I don’t remember what part, but I too shortly moved from Florida to other various states such as: MAINE, WEST VIRGINIA, VIRGINIA BEACH, MARYLAN, GARY, INDIANA, MILWAUKEE, WISCONSIN and various other states temporarily.
What made me become an artist was… Honestly I was born into it. My grandmother (Gary, Indiana native) lived Directly across the street from Legendary MICHAEL JACKSON, as Michael was rising to fame in his early career, My grandmother (Patricia Ann Bush) sang in talent shows with the Jackson 5. My uncle DJ’d, my mother Sang in class with R&B Sensation Jessie Powel.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Skrilla: At first my artist name was “STREETSWEEPA”. Once I heard that name was widely used by various artist I decided to change my name to Young Skrilla which also means Young Money. I honestly don’t know what inspired me to change my name to that, but I stuck with me.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Skrilla: Good question. I have mixed feeling about online music sharing because as an upcoming artist trying to build a strong fan base and traction, it is really hard due to millions of individuals pursuing the same dreams. Also a lot of people don’t and wont even share your music, it’s like you have to literally Beg and bother them to listen to a track. I believe every artist that is starting off has to give free music away to build that foundation of followers.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Skrilla: The very thing I suggest to any up and coming artist, is to STAY FOCUSSED, not everyone is going to like your work and PUSH PUSH PUSH your music for MONTHS. A lot of artist think they can post a song for a week or so a couple times a day and think they are going to get recognized.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Skrilla: LOL, well Yes I have made plenty of minor mistakes during a performance. The best thing you can do is keep going as if nothing even happened and don’t beat yourself up about it because we are all human.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Skrilla: I have yet to tour. I am working on Local traction before I actually tour.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Skrilla: I usually gather inspiration from real situations I’ve been through, seen, heard from a close friend or family, and I feel more comfortable writing alone in my bedroom or freestyle bits and pieces on my phone recorder then later take what I like and finish the project. I usually start with humming a made up beat in my head, then hum the melody as if I was actually rapping, then I fill in words to match the hummed melody.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Skrilla: I do not have a website at the moment Due to reconstruction and updating. As of right now I use the basics like Face Book, Soundcloud, Twitter, Reverb Nation, DatPiff, and a new site by Jermain Dupri called Global14.com
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
Skrilla: Embarrassing song?….. hmm let me think… I would probably say songs that I have recorded as a VERY young artist, I’m talking about 6th grade young. Lol
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Skrilla: As an up and coming artist still, I would use that money for Promotional uses such as: Travel, booking shows, Press Kits, Radio air play etc.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Skrilla: Yes I plan to rebuild my home studio in the near future. As of right now, I use Pro Tools 11 for vocal mixing and I use Logic Pro X for instrumentals and beats.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Skrilla: For promotion, I usually send out chain messages with a picture and a link to my Single or project that I am pushing at the moment.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Skrilla: If I could perform anywhere and with any artists, it would be in Japan and with any big named artist that’s out, I’m not too picky
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Skrilla: the next step is to accumulate a million views and take over radio stations.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Skrilla: If I wasn’t making music I most likely would be in school for business and owning my own business in the music field.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
Skrilla: Honestly I don’t remember my first bought album, I THINK it was Bone Thugs N Harmony.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Skrilla: the key is to stay humble and take it one day and step at a time. I have two beautiful daughters ages (5 &3) if they are with me, I usually take them to the studio with me or if its warm outside, I put them in the stroller and hit the streets and pass out flyers and things of that nature to promote.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Skrilla: In 2016 Fans should look out for me on their Radio stations and other media.
