VERA’s ‘Skinbag’ Traces Dark Humour Back to a Studio-Born Band

In this story

VERA began as a collaboration that changed shape while the musicians were already recording. According to the biography supplied with Skinbag, producer Declan Legge brought Darragh, Dave and Matt into sessions for Sarah’s solo work. The players connected with the songwriting and with one another, and a band emerged from the process. That origin gives this inbox discovery a clear context: collective identity developed through making music together before the group moved to the stage.

The musicians arrived with different interests, including R&B, musical theatre, metal, pop, riot grrrl and alternative rock. The supplied account stresses the freedom they found in combining those backgrounds. It describes a year of intermittent recording, working through material and developing the sounds they wanted to represent them. Rather than treating the studio simply as a place to document an existing live band, their biography makes it the setting in which the group discovered its possibilities.

Skinbag is presented in the campaign as a post-punk song about self-destruction, vulnerability and attraction to people or situations that may prove damaging. Its stated desire for connection is paired with self-deprecating humour. Those ideas fit a wider writing approach in which the band uses sarcasm to address difficult relationships. They are the musicians’ supplied explanation of the subject, rather than grounds for attributing particular autobiographical events to any member. The recording is identified by ISRC UK9M62500008.

Live performance became the next test for the group. The biography says VERA developed a set from approximately fifteen songs and played a first headline show in September 2024. Their stated aim was to translate the energy and fun of the recording room into a shared experience with an audience. That movement from private collaboration to public performance is a useful thread through the artist’s introduction. Skinbag offers a specific entry point into it, bringing the campaign’s themes of bruised relationships and dark humour together with the story of four musicians who found a new project inside sessions intended for something else.
