Lyrics:
We gotta get this boy an education
He’s smarter than me and definitely smarter than you
Boone is blind, so no one here can teach him
In St. Louis they have a school
Chorus:
School for the Blind
Children can learn
even though they can’t see
School for the Blind
Boone can learn
all that he can be
Verse:
But what about me?
I’ve been blind so many ways
Thinking my brothers and their sons and daughters weren’t as good as me
Just because they came from a different place
Looked a little different
had a darker face
people say blacks are an inferior race
I saw in battle they were as brave as me
I see in Boone they are touched by grace
Now I know my thoughts were such a disgrace
Slavery was an
insult to creation
crime upon my nation
till emancipation
gave us a second chance
Blind Boone has taught us what I couldn’t see
I was blind all the time
till he set me free
Flow:
Free from what?
Long as system does remain in place, it’s still impeding us
Already viewed as less a man, my potential, they don’t even trust
And if we do become educated, what then
We don’t see enough
Tangible equality that we can touch
Is just around the corner
Now with our own borders
Moving past the slaughter
Of seceding bunch
To proceed is just
But what we gonna do when we’re needing funds
They acted like I couldn’t even run
Just because I can’t see in front
But in hindsight
Even though I’ve never had my sight
Ya boy always knew how to keep his mind right
That’s why they hear me now and know my time’s tight
Became innovative
Even if we’re still missing true healing within our nation
Buried hatred
ended up exhumed
Ripped the patch right off the wound
Said they want to keep it, with an exclamation
Even so, I’m still forever grateful
For my education
We’re gonna get this boy an education
He’s smarter than me and definitely smarter than you
Boone is blind so no one here can teach him
In St. Louis they have a school
