Found in the Inbox: KConeil Turns Up the Heat on “Hot Like You

In this story

KConeil was born in Jamaica and raised in the village of Granville in Montego Bay, singing in church at a grandmother’s urging. The Rive Video Promotion campaign for “Hot Like You” follows the path from there: a full soccer scholarship to the United States at 16, a bachelor’s degree in finance and, while still in college, a group that won a singing contest at Madison Square Garden.

A riddim with big company

“Hot Like You” appears on the 90s Don Dada Riddim, alongside Grammy winner Beenie Man, Bounty Killer and Konshens. The video premiered on Boomshots on April 8, 2016. It was filmed in Miami, produced by WduBloise and directed by Arturo Lorde/WduBloise. “Doing the video was a dope experience,” KConeil said. “Everything fell into place and went even better than expected!”

“Genre fluid”

After the group dissolved, KConeil wrote and voiced for notable producers, and the early singles “Gyal a You” and “Me One” found rotation worldwide. Shaped by reggae roots and the melting pot of New York City, KConeil refuses to be boxed in, and the campaign has a term for the result: “genre fluid,” fusing reggae, dancehall, R&B and pop.

Why it was in the inbox

Holding a place on a riddim next to Beenie Man and Bounty Killer is a test, and “Hot Like You” passes it.
