Found in the Inbox: Fictionist Cut Loose on “Free Spirit

The Rive Video Promotion campaign for “Free Spirit” calls the title track of Fictionist’s new EP its high point: “a delicious pounding dance track” on a four-song set of catchy, intelligent songs.

Two voices, one band

Born out of Provo, Utah, the four-piece is as strong in songwriting as in playing. Stuart Maxfield and Robert Connolly share lead vocals, trading leads and creative counterpunches, while drummer Aaron Anderson and guitar, bass and synth player Brandon Kitterman drive the rhythm section under haunting guitars and screaming solos.

A video full of phone calls

The campaign describes a quirky, art-forward band with an ironic sense of humor. In the “Free Spirit” video, the four goof off on the set of a seemingly epic film whose director keeps taking calls from famous friends like Adam Levine and Bruce Springsteen instead of listening to the band.

Why it was in the inbox

Fictionist were named Best Band in Utah 2015 by City Weekly and toured with Vampire Weekend, Neon Trees and Imagine Dragons. “Free Spirit” shows why those bands took them along.
