Door Jam Records didn’t start in a sleek corporate office; it started in a cramped, damp basement apartment in Chicago during a torrential summer storm.

In August 2021, co-founders Leo Vance (a disgruntled local sound engineer) and Maya Lin (a local gig photographer and zine publisher) were hosting an underground basement showcase for a revolving cast of broke indie bands. Halfway through the headlining set, a massive flash flood hit the city, causing the building’s drainage to back up and warping the front wooden door so tightly in its frame that it literally jammed shut.

With fifty sweaty music fans trapped inside, no cell service, and water creeping across the concrete floor, nobody panicked—they just turned up the amplifiers, opened a case of warm sodas, and turned an emergency into an unforgettable four-hour guerrilla listening party.
