Found in the Inbox: Kurt Da Great Heads for the Water on “Island Girl
In this story
Curtis Hall, known as Kurt Da Great, is from Albany, Georgia, and lives in Jacksonville, Florida. The Rive Video Promotion campaign for “Island Girl” describes an artist shaped by moving around, and by the US Navy, where Kurt is an enlisted member who combines that work ethic with music.
Work ethic over talent
“Whatever I lack in talent, I’ll certainly make up for it with my work ethics,” Kurt has always said. The first memorable record was Bone Thugs-N-Harmony’s “Crossroads,” with influences including Johnnie Taylor, Kool Moe Dee, Kid ’n Play and Rob Base. The rapping started on school buses and at after-school track meets.
Catchy phrases, electric hooks
The campaign says Kurt loves enticing fans with “catchy phrases and electric hooks.” A first show at Club Bliss in May 2015 started with a hesitant crowd, “but once the beat dropped, their reaction was mind blowing.” After signing a distribution deal with Mix Therapy Records, the mission is simple: “I just wanna work.”
Why it was in the inbox
“I am driven to accomplish anything I set my mind to,” Kurt says. “Island Girl” is the lighter side of that drive.
