J.MYSTERY’s “Drifting Away” Asks How Love Survives Emotional Distance

There is a particular kind of relationship song in which the problem is not a shortage of love. Two people can still care deeply for each other and nevertheless find themselves living at an increasing distance. Portuguese singer-songwriter J.MYSTERY places that uncomfortable distinction at the centre of “Drifting Away,” his new single and the opening track of the forthcoming EP LOVE AWAY MY PAIN.

Produced by Francisco Reis, the release brings together alternative rock, electronic influences and atmospheric pop, according to the materials shared with Exposed Vocals by LPR Agency. More revealing than those genre coordinates is the situation the song sets out to explore: disappointment with how life has unfolded becomes something a couple carries into the space between them.

When care becomes difficult to share

The campaign describes a narrator who recognises a loved one’s suffering while keeping his own pain out of view. That creates the central tension. Protecting another person from your distress may look like generosity, yet it can also make honest connection harder. Each person is left responding to only part of the other’s experience.

Read in that context, the title names a gradual process rather than one decisive break. Unfulfilled hopes accumulate, communication becomes more difficult, and the relationship can begin to change before either person has chosen to leave. J.MYSTERY’s explanation of the song places the emphasis on facing that pain together. The appeal to hold hands becomes a commitment to remain present, rather than a demand that the other person simply stop moving away.

That idea gives the EP title a useful ambiguity. Love cannot be assumed to remove pain automatically; it may instead provide a way to acknowledge and share it. As an opening statement for LOVE AWAY MY PAIN, “Drifting Away” introduces that question without requiring an easy answer.

A search through a changing world

Vasco Mendes directs the accompanying music video. The official account describes a narrative moving between reality, memory and imagination, with two people still connected emotionally as their surroundings pull them apart. J.MYSTERY continues searching through a world in which physical obstacles express the distance growing within the relationship.

The recurring reach for a hand connects the visual story to the song’s central gesture. It makes emotional effort visible: contact is something the characters must keep trying to achieve. Memory and imagination also complicate that effort. Reaching for another person can mean reaching for who they are now, for the relationship as it once existed, or for the future both people hoped to have.

Fragile materials, a shared visual language

The artwork extends that idea through an entirely handmade approach by SO—MA® STUDIO. The press notes describe paper, tape and small labels, with a face repeated until it approaches disappearance. These are materials that can be assembled and preserved, but also torn, obscured or worn away. Their vulnerability offers a physical counterpart to the relationship described in the song.

Together, the single’s premise, Mendes’s video narrative and the handmade artwork approach the same difficulty from different directions: how do you hold on without pretending that nothing has changed? For J.MYSTERY, whose work connects songwriting with visual storytelling, that is a substantial starting point for a new project. “Drifting Away” and its official video are available now; LOVE AWAY MY PAIN is forthcoming.
