I want people to understand that lyrical ability should always be a high standard in hip-hop, even in today’s viral-driven era.

J DaVon Harris: First off, I think it’s a great album title. The theme is tied into that title — it’s me reflecting, rapping stream-of-consciousness style, and constructing full songs. It’s about sharing my story across time — past, present, and future.

Exposed Vocals: What was your creative process like during the recording of this project? Any standout moments in the studio?

J DaVon Harris: I’m still creating, but two sessions stand out. One with musician Harvey Cummings — we knocked out three songs in one night at Grindhaus Studios. The other was with my brother Anthony Heron; he brought in Logan Ellis for a guitar part, and it elevated the track completely. It was a moment of real collaboration and alignment.

Exposed Vocals: How do you stay inspired and motivated as an artist, especially in today’s fast-moving music industry?

J DaVon Harris: I live life and take my time. Being independent means I don’t have to rush. For example, I have a song on the album called Last Night in Willemstad that was inspired by a vacation this summer. I draw from real-life moments. Shout out to Jus Smith who’s featured on that one.

J DaVon Harris: Absolutely. Artists like Nas, The Clipse, and Ghostface have been huge influences — and they’re all still active. I’m also deeply inspired by R&B across decades. The songwriting in R&B is unmatched when it comes to emotional storytelling.

J DaVon Harris: I want them to enjoy the ride and come away with a better understanding of me as an artist. I call it adult contemporary hip hop — it’s music for people who’ve lived some life and can relate to both the ambition and the introspection.

J DaVon Harris: It’s everything. I stand on authenticity. That means I include the wins and the losses. There’s no filter in my pen.

J DaVon Harris: It’s not a huge production. I could be watching my Knicks, mute the TV, and write something in my notes app. Studio sessions are usually just me and my brother Ten Tonz — and maybe a bottle of champagne. Not the party vibe people might imagine.

J DaVon Harris: Absolutely. I’ve got a network of musicians who always show love and extend the stage. I plan to pop up at some internet-based platforms as well. Also, shoutout to my mixing engineer Reggie — Tear It Down was the first track he mixed for the project, and it really set the tone.
