The Grammys Will Keep Asian Pop — Even as BTS and Stray Kids Sit Out 2027

The Recording Academy is moving ahead with Best Asian Pop Music Performance for the 2027 Grammy Awards, even as two of the biggest names in K-pop will not participate.

Stray Kids’ label JYP Entertainment confirmed the group did not submit music before the August 21 entry deadline. BTS had already announced in July that its members would not submit music for the 2027 awards.

The category is staying

Music Business Worldwide reported October 5 that Recording Academy CEO Harvey Mason jr. confirmed the organization will retain the new category after a period of reconsideration.

The Academy originally announced Best Asian Pop Music Performance in June as one of five new categories for the 69th Grammys. According to the official Grammy rules announcement, the award is intended for Asian pop performances, including K-pop, J-pop and C-pop, with meaningful use of one or more Asian languages.

The Academy says the category has received a robust level of submissions and argues that adding categories expands recognition rather than restricting artists to one lane.

BTS raised the larger question: recognition or separation?

BTS’s July decision made the category controversial before its first nominees were even announced. The group said it hoped music could be heard and loved without being divided by region or language.

That concern goes to the heart of genre awards. A dedicated category can create space for work that may be underrepresented elsewhere. But it can also create a perception that globally successful artists are being routed into a regional box rather than competing on equal terms across pop and the General Field.

The Academy has emphasized that entering an Asian Pop recording does not prevent the same artist from being considered for major awards such as Record, Song or Album of the Year where eligible.

Stray Kids adds weight without giving a reason

JYP Entertainment confirmed that Stray Kids made no submissions for the 2027 ceremony but did not publicly explain the decision. That distinction matters: BTS gave a philosophical reason for stepping away, while Stray Kids’ absence should not automatically be interpreted as the same protest.

Still, the result is striking. Two globally dominant K-pop acts will be absent from consideration in the first year of a category designed in part to recognize music coming from the markets they helped push deeper into the global mainstream.

The first nominee list will define the category more than the announcement did

The real test begins when nominations are announced November 16. If the field feels musically broad, competitive and connected to how Asian pop actually travels around the world, the category may gain legitimacy quickly. If it feels narrow or disconnected from the most influential releases, the debate will intensify.

For independent artists, the story is also a reminder that genre labels can be both opportunity and limitation. Categories help listeners discover scenes, but artists increasingly build audiences that ignore geography, format and industry taxonomies.

The Recording Academy has chosen to keep the category. Now the nominees — and the artists who choose not to participate — will determine what it comes to mean.
