Found in the Inbox: Pitbull and Enrique Iglesias Keep It Light on “Messin’ Around”
In this story
By the time “Messin’ Around” reached programmers, Armando Christian Perez needed very little introduction. The Rive Video Promotion campaign for the single, which features Enrique Iglesias, opened with the numbers: more than five million albums and 60 million singles sold, No. 1 hits in more than 15 countries and music videos with more than five billion views.
A catalog of anthems
The campaign recapped the run that made those numbers. It pointed to “Feel This Moment” with Christina Aguilera, “Don’t Stop the Party,” “Back in Time” from Men in Black 3 and “Timber” featuring Ke$ha, which the release lists as Pitbull’s second No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It also notes sold-out tours across North and South America, Europe and the Far East.
Mr. Worldwide, the business
The release spends nearly as long on business as on music. It lists Voli vodka, Sheets energy strips and a line of Pitbull fragrances, sponsorships with Bud Light, Dr Pepper, Kodak and Dodge, a television deal with Endemol North America through the production company Honey I’m Home, a New Year’s Eve special on Fox and a partnership with Playboy Enterprises. In 2015 Pitbull received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
Why it was in the inbox
Two of pop’s most familiar voices on one record, and a campaign that knew it: “Messin’ Around” is a light, upbeat single from an artist whose name already does most of the work.
