Found in the Inbox: Everpresent Turns Toward the Dance Floor With “Hypnotic”
In this story
Everpresent is the Boston project of Matthew Cahoon, and by the time Rive Video Promotion sent us “Hypnotic” in 2015 it was already on its seventh release. The single introduced Omega Point, a six-song EP that the campaign framed as a deliberate turn: brighter, funkier and built for the dance floor, without giving up the introspection that had defined the project’s darker, sensual pop.
Old collaborators, a new voice
According to the release notes, Omega Point brought back Steve Catizone, the producer and mastering engineer who had worked with Everpresent since 2002, and continued Cahoon’s work with producer and engineer Ryan Hinkle. Cahoon also added a new pop and soul backing vocalist, Camila Alves. The EP combined four new tracks with two remixes of those songs.
The campaign’s own description of the sound is “bright, funky, mystical, and designed to get people moving,” while still “promoting self-reflection, but in a more optimistic and sensual way.” “Hypnotic” was chosen to lead that change, and the EP was set for a worldwide release on October 15, 2015, with international radio and video campaigns.
A working musician’s résumé
Everpresent’s music had already traveled further than many independent projects do. The campaign lists placements on mtvU and soundtrack use on MTV, the Science Channel, TLC and Discovery Channel programs, plus airplay from DJs in nine countries. Cahoon had opened for Metropolis Records artist Ego Likeness and Digital Bear Entertainment’s Vishno, toured nationally as a backing musician on vocals, keyboards and drums, and was a voting member of the Recording Academy.
In 2015 the project won three Akademia Awards: best music video for “In My Veins,” best dance/pop rock song for “Window” and best dance/pop song for “Haunt Me.” An earlier track, “Mine,” appeared on the German darkTunes compilation Gothic Music Orgy Vol. 1, distributed across Europe.
Why it was in the inbox
“Hypnotic” captures a long-running project choosing a new direction instead of repeating a formula. Bringing back the engineer who had been there from the start, while adding a new voice, gave the change a clear foundation.
