The Fairytale formed in February 1967 in Warrington, Lancashire.
The founder members were: John Weston, Malcolm Rabbit, Chiddy Penketh, Billy Fogg and John Ryan. The band were managed by Pete Rigby and Chris Culleton, they were the resident band at the Cavern Club in Liverpool for a month. They also played on the same bill as Little Richard at the ‘Peppermint Lounge’ in Liverpool, with Doris Troy at the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and even held their own at the home of Northern Soul in England – the ‘Wigan Casino’.
In May 1967 they auditioned at Ronnie Scott’s nightclub in London, for Don Arden, and were signed immediately to Decca Records.
Don Arden asked if they had any songs relevant to ‘psychedelia’ and ‘flower power’ so they played ‘Guess I Was Dreaming’. This was recorded in June 1967 with ‘Run and Hide’ as the ‘B’ side. The band split in January 1968.
“Guess I Was Dreaming” is their magnum opus, a piece of psychedelia that’s pop-ish without being wimpy, with a great beat and some weird guitar sounds from John Weston.
