I grew up in the Bronx and I have friends that live in Astoria – so, I’ve been going there for about 5 years now. I love the restaurants, love many of the bars, love the overall vibe… But I have been sorely and consistently disappointed by Astoria’s music offerings.
I feel like the vast majority of bands I encounter in Astoria’s bars are either cover bands — and no matter WHICH borough you’re in, cover bands are a uniformly horrifying proposition — or bland derivations on warmed-over radio rock or too-earnest singer-songwriter types. In 5 years, I can’t say I’ve encountered any genuinely forward-thinking rock, rap or pop music in Astoria.
I wanted to be wrong! I asked to be pointed in the direction of some Queens bands you guys find genuinely exciting. I want to believe they’re out there!\
Then one day this track – Willie Contraband’s new single “Everytime” featuring Calvin Mathews hit my desk… …and I was blown away! Lyrically, the artist in on point! I think I’ve listened to the track a hundred times already and I would recommend anyone reading to this to go download it now.
Let me just say that New York is known to bring the heat and this song has all of the staples of serious club banger. However, with Willie Contraband’s New Jersey raised influences contributing to this track; It makes the perfect formula to being such a success.
Overall, this is a powerful piece of modern hip-hop that packs a real punch. This is also a great choice for a single – it’s insanely catchy, very well produced and showcases Willie Contraband as a hip-hop artist with a strong personality and style.
