Zoltán Kárpáti on “Believe Me” and Writing Songs for the World
In this story
Zoltán Kárpáti is a songwriter from Cegléd, Hungary, and he first arrived on Exposed Vocals with “Believe Me,” which we introduced in kárpáti zoltán – Believe me. The song was recorded at a friend’s studio, and like the rest of his music it is written in English, a deliberate choice for an artist who wants his songs to travel well beyond Hungary. He traces his musical taste back to the Hungarian band Illés, whose songs shaped him when he was young.
We sent him a set of questions by e-mail, and he answered in his own words. Below, he talks about the feeling behind “Believe Me,” growing up in Cegléd, why he writes in English, and the dream that drives him now: hearing his songs sung by other voices.
What is the story behind “Believe Me”, and what moment or feeling first set the song in motion?
Zoltán Kárpáti: “Believe Me” was inspired by the universal feeling of love. It isn’t about one particular person or a specific story, but about the emotions that love can bring out in all of us.
Walk us through how the track was recorded: where you worked, who was involved, and what changed between the first demo and the final version.
Zoltán Kárpáti: “Believe Me” was recorded at a friend’s studio.
Where in Hungary did you grow up, and how has the music and culture around you there shaped the way you write and sing?
Zoltán Kárpáti: I grew up in Cegléd, Hungary. The Hungarian band Illés had a great influence on me and my musical taste when I was young.
The title “Believe Me” is in English. What decides for you whether a song is written in English or Hungarian, and how does the language change the way you write?
Zoltán Kárpáti: I write my songs in English because I want my music to be heard and discovered internationally. I hope my songs can reach listeners in other countries as well.
What first pulled you toward making music, and what keeps you coming back to it today?
Zoltán Kárpáti: Music means everything to me. I love creating music and writing songs. I want to share my music with people because it is a very important part of my life.
What is next for you after “Believe Me”, whether new songs, a larger release, or live shows, and what do you hope listeners will hear in that next step?
Zoltán Kárpáti: My biggest dream is to have my songs performed by singers and heard by as many people as possible. I would love my music to reach audiences both in Hungary and internationally.
What stands out across his answers is how firmly Kárpáti thinks of himself as a songwriter first. He writes in English so the songs can cross borders, he describes “Believe Me” as a song about what love brings out in all of us rather than one person’s story, and his biggest ambition is not a stage of his own but hearing other singers carry his songs further.
