Early Life and Musical Inspiration
Randy: Can you tell us about your early life in Nigeria and how your upbringing influenced your musical journey?
Fresh Caps: I was born in Michika, Adamawa State, Nigeria, and spent my early years there before moving to Jada and Ganye. Growing up in a culturally rich environment, I was exposed to various musical styles and traditions. My early experiences in church, particularly as a member of the Youth Band, played a significant role in shaping my passion for singing and performing.
Randy: When did you first realize you wanted to pursue music, and what was the moment that solidified that decision?
Fresh Caps: I realized I wanted to pursue music during my secondary school years. The moment that solidified my decision was when I composed my first gospel song, I’m Alive, in JSS 2. My friend performed it on stage, and the positive feedback made me understand that music was my true calling.
Randy: Michael Jackson has been a major influence on you—what aspects of his artistry inspired your own style?
Fresh Caps: His artistry inspired me in many ways, particularly his dynamic performances, which blended incredible vocals with emotional expression. His ability to connect with audiences through powerful storytelling and captivating dance moves motivated me to develop my own unique style. I’ve always been a big fan of his because I love dancing too.
Randy: What challenges did you face early in your career, and how did you overcome them?
Fresh Caps: Early in my career, I struggled to balance my musical projects with academic commitments. I didn’t have enough time or resources for marketing, and people doubted whether music was a realistic pursuit in my small town. I overcame these obstacles by staying dedicated to my craft, investing my savings in my music, and using online platforms to promote myself. My determination and belief in my talent kept me going.
Randy: Were there any cultural or musical influences from Nigeria that shaped your sound today?
Fresh Caps: The rich musical heritage of Nigeria, including Afrobeat and traditional rhythms, has greatly influenced my sound. I incorporate these elements into my music, blending them with R&B, hip-hop, and pop to create a unique and engaging style that resonates with a diverse audience.
Randy: How did your family and friends react to your decision to pursue music professionally?
Fresh Caps: Some of my friends were skeptical, saying I’d regret spending money on studio sessions and that I wouldn’t succeed unless I made Afrobeat music. But my mom never discouraged me—she encouraged me to finish school and keep chasing my passion. While working on the farm, I shared my dream of making money from my music. She was happy because she believed I could help the family escape poverty, and that’s what I promised her.
Musical Style and Themes
Randy: Your music blends hip-hop and pop seamlessly. How do you approach mixing these genres in your work?
Fresh Caps: I focus on creating a dynamic and energetic sound that inspires movement and joy while appealing to a broad audience. I use elements from both genres, like catchy melodies, powerful rhythms, and thought-provoking lyrics, to create a blend that is both accessible and memorable.
Randy: Can you walk us through your songwriting process? Do you start with lyrics, melodies, or a concept?
Fresh Caps: My songwriting process often starts with a concept or a feeling I want to express. I then explore different melodies and rhythms that capture the essence of that concept. Sometimes the lyrics come first, sometimes the melody, and sometimes they develop together. I embrace whatever direction inspires me at the moment.
Randy: Many of your songs explore themes of love, motivation, and aspiration. What draws you to these topics?
Fresh Caps: I cherish these themes because they resonate deeply with people. Love is a powerful emotion, and motivation is essential for overcoming challenges. I want my music to provide hope, encouragement, and a sense of connection.
Randy: How do your personal experiences shape the emotions and stories in your music?
Fresh Caps: My personal experiences play a significant role in shaping my music. My first three songs—Birthday, Gratitude, and Life to the Fullest—reflect my journey and the lessons I’ve learned. Each song is a piece of my story.
“Gratitude” and Other Works
Randy: Gratitude is an incredibly powerful song—what inspired you to write it, and what does it mean to you personally?
Fresh Caps: Gratitude was inspired by my journey and the importance of appreciating life, even when it doesn’t seem exciting. It’s a reminder to stay thankful for all experiences, both good and bad. As I say in the lyrics, “I’ma appreciate the way that life goes boom,” it’s about embracing every moment.
Randy: What was the creative process like for Gratitude, from concept to final production?
Fresh Caps: It started with a simple idea of expressing thankfulness. I wrote my thoughts down, turned them into lyrics, and used a free beat that matched my vision. The final production involved layering vocals and refining the sound to make it resonate deeply with listeners.
Randy: How does Gratitude fit into your larger discography and artistic message?
Fresh Caps: Gratitude aligns with my goal of spreading positivity and motivation. It reinforces the idea that being thankful brings greater abundance into our lives.
Randy: Do you have any upcoming projects or releases?
Fresh Caps: Yes! My upcoming R&B track My Anchor drops on March 14th. It’s about resilience, commitment, and trust in a relationship. From early feedback, it’s received high ratings for its sweet melody, soulful vocals, and improvised conversation. You won’t want to miss it!
Future Goals and Aspirations
Randy: What are your long-term goals as an artist? Where do you see yourself in five to ten years?
Fresh Caps: My long-term goals include breaking into the mainstream, headlining major festivals, collaborating with top artists, and venturing into music production. I want to build a legacy that inspires future musicians.
Randy: If you could collaborate with any artist, past or present, who would it be and why?
Fresh Caps: I’d love to collaborate with Chris Brown or Forrest Frank. Their genre-blending skills and innovative music inspire me.
Randy: What message do you have for your fans who support your music and journey?
Fresh Caps: I want to express my heartfelt gratitude. Always put God first, stay positive, and chase your dreams. Every challenge is a stepping stone to something greater.
