Chappell Roan Says Break-Up Anthem ‘My Kink Is Karma’ Keeps Her Locked in Heartbreak
Chappell Roan is known for her bold lyrics and fearless pop energy — but sometimes, art imitates pain a little too closely.
During a recent appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, the Midwest Princess singer confessed that performing her fiery break-up track, “My Kink Is Karma,” has actually stalled her emotional healing. The 2022 single, already a fan favorite for its unapologetic anger and schadenfreude, forces Roan to relive the bitterness that inspired it.
“I’m less worried about hitting the notes rather than just screaming as hard as I can,” Roan explained. “I actually still feel pissed. I don’t know if I’ll ever get over it. I don’t know if I’ll ever not be mad.”
When co-host Bowen Yang suggested the song itself might be keeping her stuck in those feelings, Roan agreed.
“Yeah, and that’s what’s so hard about writing about exes because you’re locked in, especially if you hate them. I get angry every time I sing it. It’s real! It’s very real.”
My Kink Is Karma found new life in 2023 after the massive success of Roan’s debut album The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess, catapulting her into the pop spotlight with a rawness few artists dare to show.
Elsewhere in the interview, Roan got candid about her performance style, revealing that she actually feels more comfortable delivering emotional ballads live than high-energy pop tracks.
“I have a ballad voice way more suited for it. The ballads go so heavy live because they sound better,” she added.
Between her unfiltered honesty and powerhouse vocals, Chappell Roan is carving out a lane all her own — messy feelings and all. And if anything, My Kink Is Karma proves that sometimes, staying a little mad can be its own kind of therapy.
