Cardopusher returns for another EP of heaters on his own Classicworks label. The producer delves even deeper into analog electronics and driving, 4×4 rhythms on his ‘Police Is Coming’ EP, showcasing a range of influences from percussive EBM to lo-fi warehouse acid with great aplomb.
‘1989 Warehouse’ kicks off proceedings with its stripped back, tape hiss flow, relying on its slow filter bassline and driving kick drums, which continue throughout the track as it journeys into industrial layering, hypnotic vocals and dark basement grooves.
The darkness and introspection of the first track is swapped out for a more urgent, analog rave attitude on ‘Police Are Coming (Emergency Mixx)’. Toms and snares fly wildly around woozy sidechained pads and an acid bassline, recalling in every turn a wild 80’s videogame police chase on repeat.
‘Mouthwash Acid’ polishes off Cardopusher’s trilogy well, focussing right in on grinding 303 and staccato drum machine spurts. Taking its time to come together, this is Cardopusher at his cleverest, where seemingly disparate rhythms come together as a wavy, drug-induced whole, underpinned by unsettling vocal chants and plenty of dark, cave-like reverb.
The remixes add a welcome set of reinterpretations to the originals, with fellow Classicworks boss Nehuen flipping ‘Police Are Coming’ into a 3am acid anthem, with Barcelona rhythm master Phran resetting ‘1989 Warehouse’ into a neck snapping serve of old school, saturated electro.
