Found in the Inbox: The Velveteins Go Garage-Pop on “Hanging From the Ceiling
In this story
Exclaim! called The Velveteins “a collision of the Kinks and the Libertines, rollicking garage, moody surf […and] pop classicism with a rough edge.” Ride the Tempo put it more simply: “It’s kinda like T-Rex covering The Everly Brothers.” The Rive Video Promotion campaign for “Hanging From the Ceiling” led with both.
Edmonton heavy guitar pop
From Edmonton, Alberta, The Velveteins are built around songwriters Spencer Morphy on vocals and guitar and Addison Hiller on percussion, joined on stage by Dean Kheroufi on bass. A Hot Second With The Velveteins was produced by Lincoln Parish of Cage the Elephant and re-released in spring 2016 by Fierce Panda Canada, adding more punch and psychedelic edges to the melodic indie and blues rock of earlier work.
On the road
The campaign describes raucous live shows opening for USS, Milo Greene and July Talk, and touring across Canada and overseas, with stops at Canadian Music Week and TIFF in Toronto and The Great Escape in Brighton, then London and the US West Coast. The “Hanging From the Ceiling” video was featured on MUCH, and a debut full-length album was in progress.
Why it was in the inbox
Garage rock with this much melody is rarer than it sounds. “Hanging From the Ceiling” has both.
