Found in the Inbox: Travis J Takes the Gulf Coast Home on “Love Sounds”

Travis J music video

In this story

Travis J tells the story in the first person in the Rive Video Promotion campaign for “Love Sounds.” “I was born in San Bernardino California and raise in Mobile Alabama,” it begins. “My musical roots come from my mother who sung and led testimony service as first lady at the church my father pastored.”

A detour through Sons of Funk

As an adult Travis J developed as a singer, writer and recording artist, but money put the plans on hold. That changed when Rico Crowder set out to restart Sons of Funk, the 90s group signed to No Limit Records, which Travis J describes as having sold over 30 million records. Travis J was recruited into the new lineup, Sons of Funk/New Era. The group split after a short run, “but do to the publicity I decided to release my single LOVE SOUNDS in which my region is supporting (Gulf Coast).”

A regional résumé

The campaign lists the accomplishments: opening for J. Holiday and BET comedian Shawty Shawty, a No. 1 on the Underground Countdown at 93BLX The Big Station, nominations for best male R&B at the Real Talk Awards in 2012, 2013 and 2014, and at the Alabama Music Awards in 2015 and 2016.

Why it was in the inbox

“Love Sounds” is a church-raised R&B singer’s solo statement, backed first by the region that knows the story best.
