Seven years after Midnight, Stef Chura is back with Dancing Alone on the Concrete. The Detroit songwriter released the album October 2, ending a long gap between full-length projects and reintroducing a voice that became one of the defining features of her earlier indie-rock work.
All of the songs were written by Chura. Most of the record was tracked at Chase Park Transduction in Athens, Georgia, with “Thunder and Lightning” recorded at Casa de LeMaster and additional work completed at Toy Piano Studio in New Orleans. David Barbe and Andy LeMaster handled mixing, while Joe Lambert mastered the album.
A return that doesn’t simply recreate 2019
The long interval matters because Dancing Alone on the Concrete is not positioned as an attempt to pick up exactly where Midnight stopped. Early songs from the project point toward a wider arrangement palette: “Lovesick” leans into piano, “Babydoll” moves through a more playful guitar setting, and “Thunder and Lightning” introduces synth textures into Chura’s songwriting.
“Danny” also connects the album to Athens music history through contributions from R.E.M. members Peter Buck and Mike Mills. Their appearance is notable, but the center of the project remains Chura’s writing and unmistakable vocal phrasing.
What seven years can change
Chura’s earlier records often used volume and abrasion as part of their emotional language. The new material has been discussed in markedly different terms: less dependent on explosive release and more willing to leave uncertainty unresolved. That makes the return interesting beyond the length of the hiatus itself.
In practical terms, Dancing Alone on the Concrete expands the range of sounds surrounding Chura without erasing the traits that made her earlier work recognizable. After seven years, the story is not simply that Stef Chura has returned. It is that she has returned without treating her old sound as a fixed destination.
