New Interview with brazilian alternative band Fauno
Fauno is a brazilian alternative band from Curitiba, Paraná.
In late 2012, the band released the single “Faroeste”, with a little less than 6 months of formation. With it, began to make their first shows in Curitiba and metropolitan area during 2013.
In 2014, the group was dedicated to his first release, the EP “Corona”. The album, which contains 4 songs, was released in the fall of that year and took the band to several important communication vehicles of Paraná. In addition, the album received critical and very positive reviews on blogs and magazines of national renown.
The album was distributed in major streaming platform in the world, such as iTunes, Spotify, Rdio, etc. Followed by a release show at the famous “Teatro Paiol” in Curitiba on 06 September 2014. The album name refers to the solar corona and, in a figurative sense means “light does not go out.” That’s what the band want to spend with the EP songs, which are different from each other, but with lyrics that speak of second chances, new beginnings. The sound of the band generates different opinions, often being compared to the group Los Hermanos, as well as The Killers and Muse. Even in 2014, the group was one of 24 selected within hundreds of candidates to participate in the Kaiser Generation Festival held by Mundo Livre FM Radio, done that made the band entered for the radio programming. In November of that year, the album surpassed the 100,000 mark in Rdio plays, making the album of the TOP 10 of the site, with the Arctic Monkeys and Imagine Dragons.
For 2015, the band released two videoclips, including the start of their VEVO channel with the video of the music “Faroeste”, recorded in late 2014. The group prepare more material for release in summer / fall, which includes a new single, which will be distributed only on vinyl and in digital format. The band will start preparations for their first full studio album.
Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?
Fauno: Actually, the Exposed Vocals contacted us on Twitter and we thought it was a amazing idea to work in. Congratulations for all Exposed Vocals team for the great job.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Fauno: each of us has a different formation within the music. We all grew up in Curitiba, a city in southern Brazil, except Pablo, he was born in the central region of the country. I think we all started playing when we were teenagers, the music spoke louder to us and we decided to go ahead. We tried to do something different before, but we never had much success, the music always drew us to it, it is a calling, our destiny. haha.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Fauno: Fauno was an old king, who made the society in which he ruled prosper both economically and culturally. He conquered all this through self-knowledge and self-evolution. That’s what we intend to go with our music, we can always be better than we are and keep learning from ourselves. That’s the message.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Fauno: the current music market cannot get away from the streaming. The streaming is now a reality and came to help in the challenge against online piracy, in our opinion. Our songs are in every possible streaming platforms worldwide. That’s not to distribute music for free, once we are paid by the stores. It’s a much more democratic and fair view in some way. What is not fair to any artist is to distribute music completely free without any compensation. This is our livelihood, and nobody works for free. The public needs to understand this and we believe that they already understand.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Fauno: Here in Brazil we are structuring a rock scene very strong and stable, bands with professional attitude that know what they want. In our city, we can cite those who are always with us, as Médicos de Cuba, Monreal and Bellize. Other cities have: Pessoal of Nasa, Canto Cego, Nove Zero Nove, Dingo Bells, Zimbra, Dona Cislene, Medulla and many others.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Fauno: The fun of playing shows is that even when everything is carefully planned, something always goes wrong. We never went through anything too terrible, sometimes we invert the lyrics, or someone misses a riff … someday happened that the guitars remain muted and the cymbals fell, haha. But we always managed to do well in these situations, we never took a shame that the public knew and affect the climax of the show.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
Fauno: Yes, we’re on tour for more than 7 states in Brazil and more presentations will happen. Being on tour means that some very crazy thing will happen to you! We remember a case happened in São Paulo, where the show had everything to go wrong, speaker’s problems, problems with the producer, etc. But, the show was amazing and our first fan club came from there! That day we spent the night in the airport, without sleep, the transfer from city’s airport and the city of the show was a car very, very small. It was exhausting but when we remember we laugh a lot because the show was fantastic! This reminds us to never allow external things affect our goal, these kind of events motivates us a lot!
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Fauno: Who usually write the lyrics it’s me (Ivan), my inspiration comes from my life’s situations, bad and good moments. Is the way I found to externalise all my feelings and move on without clinging to the routine. Normally I create the lyric and the melody then I show for them and we work on it together. We also compose together, sometimes the creative process can change.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Fauno: You can find all our social media and information on: www.ofauno.com
We are on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Spotify too:
open.spotify.com/artist/7lYzgRF5SzQWjF7AYDJ5i7
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?
Fauno: Hmmm, maybe you can find some pop music, like Katy Perry or something. By the way I’m going to watch her show (obviously to see her performance and all the technical production) haha.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Fauno: WOW! We have so much to do with that this money that is hard to think on vacation, haha. But probably most of us would travel, take a cruise and spend a few months abroad with our girlfriends and families. Michel would probably buy cars and parties.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
Fauno: Well, now we’re finalizing the recording of two new songs that will come out in a compact very soon. Are different songs that we never released before, I think we’re more mature and it will be the gateway to our first full album.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Fauno: We use the internet a lot and we found ways to promote offline too, that has rendered us many results. Our fan club is our main weapon of disclosure, in a few days our videoclip was already almost 10k views on Youtube because of them.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Fauno: Kings of Leon. We are a contemporary band and the sound of Kings of Leon is one of the linking all the influences of the band. It would be really awesome if we could share the stage with them.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Fauno: Besides the compact that we have already commented, we have clips for those songs. And let’s get to work and find a way to produce our record at the beginning of next year. By the end of this year we have many shows to play. We also want to play in festivals and travel more.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Fauno: A producer or music entrepreneur, something connected to music.
Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?
Fauno(Ivan): I bought my first album at a concert of a local band. I was drunk and thought everything amazing and wanted to be like them.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Fauno: Actually the music and all your business demands a lot time for us. The life of an independent band is so much sweat and little sleep. We all have other activities and other projects and we must turn in order to comply with the entire schedule of the band, but no doubt the band is a priority for everyone here, it is essential if we want to succeed at it.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2015?
Fauno: More content, more work and new developments. Furthermore, we will visit cities that we have never been before. To these people we can say we have a lot of energy to show in the gigs, we hope to see everyone there!
