Phantom’s Divine Comedy – Merlin (heavy psych from Michigan with lyrics) 1974
Phantom’s Divine Comedy – Merlin (composer: Phantom)
Lyrics
LET those who walk before me fear
For they are there and I am here
Behind the shadows held in fright
They tried to hide inside the light
Accepting lines for truth and fact
It still there’s something quite exact
An inborn question left unasked
Afraid to see the face unmasked
And yet within it burns, it gnaws
Still stuck inside those hollow jaws
A victim of a life that keeps
It never gives
And never sleeps
And never sleeps
And never sleeps
Centuries ago I was a young magician
Working for a king
Using all the powers of my magic
I controlled most anything
I could make the mountains walk
Now and then the trees would talk
But now I’m trapped inside of a tree
I don’t know what it was but something happened
And I turned the queen to stone
I told my friend the jester
He just turned his heels
And left me all alone
Then my thoughts began to change
My spells began to rearrange
And now I’m trapped inside of a tree
What happens now I’m asking you
What is the meaning of a joke
It seems there’s nothing I can do
Emprisoned in the briary hole
Mmm…
Someday I’ll break this curse
And that’s the day
That Merlin will return
There’ll be no place to hide
My vengeance reach you and you’ll burn
Now my mind begins to flash
And I can feel my senses clash
Alone I’m trapped inside of a tree

As I understand, and I hope that I write it well: the story began with Walpurgis. They were discovered by a manager during a concert in Grande Ballroom. 3 days later they were in New York, recording an album. Then, because similarity was found in voice between the singer’s voice and Jim Morrison’s late voice, the record company (Capitol Records) had an idea, so the singer of Walpurgis changed his name to “Phantom”.
I hope that I think well, that the singer name was Ted Pearson (more website, mention Tom Carson). After the album was released, Ted decided to change his name to Arthur Pendragon. This was done to go with the Magician/Wizard theme of the Lp That Ted had been doing for years with his band WALPURGIS.

Phantom’s WALPURGIS – Back From Hell
http://www.discogs.com/artist/Phantom+%2836%29
here they write the same information under “Phantom” and “Phantom’s Divine Comedy”:
Psychedelic rock group from Detroit, Michigan, USA, active in the early to mid 1970s, previously known as Walpurgis. They released one album, 1974’s “Phantom’s Divine Comedy”. The musical instrumentation, mystical themes, and vocalist’s penchant for Jim Morrison-esque vocal stylings on the album led some listeners to spread wild rumors that this was a new project from the deceased Doors bandleader. The speculation was fueled by the fact that the members all used simple pseudonyms in the album’s credits. To this day, there is great confusion and misinformation about the names of the people involved in the group itself.
More website mention as members of Phantom’s Divine Comedy:
– Phantom (aka Tom Carson) — vocals, guitar, keyboards
– Gary Meisner — guitar
– X (aka John Bdanjeck) — drums, percussion
– Y (aka Dennis Craner) — bass
– Z (aka Mike DeMartino) — keyboards
Later I found new facts, THESE NAMES are WRONG!!! These names belong to Happy Dragon Band, in my opinion.
