Jethro’s first solo record, “VHS,” moved the Liberian-born, Lagos-based artist beyond his work with The Retro and into a more personal frame.

A solo identity takes shape
Jethro described the record as his first solo release after building much of his catalog as one half of The Retro. Produced by his friend and frequent collaborator Soulker, “VHS” draws on a past relationship and uses that emotional history as the center of its R&B and trap crossover.
The artist’s current Spotify profile identifies him as a Liberian singer and rapper from Monrovia who is based in Lagos. It also keeps “VHS” visible alongside later releases including “Slme” and “Pantasya,” giving the early solo track a clear place in the public catalog rather than leaving it as an isolated submission.
From collaboration to self-definition
Jethro’s story places him in Lagos’s independent scene as both an artist and a producer. The Retro provided the shared foundation; solo work created room for a different kind of writing—more personal, more inward and less dependent on the identity of the group.
That distinction matters. “VHS” is not simply a side project bearing a different name. It is the point where Jethro began defining what his own voice could carry, while retaining the melodic instincts and trap vocabulary developed through collaboration.
An early record that still explains the catalog
“VHS” remains one of the visible anchors on Jethro’s official artist page. The title itself suggests the mechanics of recollection: imperfect playback, emotional grain and the way certain scenes keep playing after they have ended.
For an artist moving from a duo into solo work, that metaphor is fitting. The record looks backward for its subject, but its real purpose is forward motion.
