Tommy Bolin with Zephyr at The Day of Joy Festival Houston Texas 1970
This footage has been seen elsewhere with audio dubbed in from the first Zephyr album. This version has the audio dubbed from a live tape labeled Ebbets Field 1971, a song called “Goin’ Home” (otherwise known from Woodstock in the version by Alvin Lee and Ten Years After.) As noted by one observant historian on the Bolin Board forum, the ending riff of this live song reappeared “more famously” on the classic album Spectrum by Billy Cobham, the acknowledged inspiration for Jeff Beck to explore Jazz fusion music in his own recordings.
Update (9/15/’13 :After a comment from wretchedhyena appeared below stating that Zephyr did not appear at The Texas International Pop Festival, I asked David Givens, founding member and bassist for Zephyr, to identify the venue where this footage was filmed. Thanks to David for his reply, part of which which appears below:
David Givens: “I’ll do some homework. I know we played in Houston at a pop festival –
I’ll hit you back when I sort this out. D……(later) Okay, I found it! It was the Day of Joy Festival at the Almeda Speedway in Houston Texas on Sunday, July 19, 1970. On the bill: Albert King, ZZ Top, Leon Russell, Mott The Hoople, Flash Cadillac, PG&E, and more. I saw a poster for it that was signed by many of the artists, including Candy!
