Opening Statements and First Witness Testimonies Begin in Sean “Diddy” Combs’s Federal Trial
The federal trial of Sean “Diddy” Combs entered a pivotal phase today, May 12, 2025, as opening statements were delivered and the first witnesses were called in a courtroom packed with media, legal observers, and members of the public.
Prosecutors opened with a powerful and detailed account of what they described as a “decades-long criminal enterprise built on coercion, intimidation, and sexual exploitation.” Framing Combs as the orchestrator of a network that enabled and concealed predatory behavior, the prosecution alleged that the hip-hop mogul used his wealth and influence to entrap vulnerable women in a world of control, drugs, and abuse.
“Behind the flashing lights, the luxury, and the celebrity branding was a dark system of control,” the lead prosecutor told jurors. “The defendant operated with impunity because of who he was. Today, that ends.”
The prosecution previewed key evidence, including electronic communications, videos, and financial records, and announced that several accusers will testify under oath. They also revealed that cooperating witnesses from Combs’s inner circle are expected to testify about his alleged methods of manipulation and enforcement.
In response, Combs’s defense team painted a sharply different picture. Lead attorney Benjamin Brafman argued that the prosecution’s narrative is “a distortion rooted in embellishment, regret, and financial motives.” He insisted that Combs’s relationships and sexual encounters were consensual, and described the case as “an attack on lifestyle, not law.”
“What the government calls trafficking, we will prove was consensual adult behavior, twisted out of context by people who now seek to profit from shame,” Brafman said.
Following opening statements, the court heard from the first witness: a woman identified only as “Witness A,” one of the civil plaintiffs whose lawsuit helped spark the federal investigation. Through tearful testimony, she described meeting Combs as a teenager and being drawn into what she called a “cycle of fear, silence, and submission.” She recounted instances of alleged abuse, drugging, and coercion, at times pausing to compose herself under questioning.
Cross-examination by the defense attempted to challenge inconsistencies in her past statements and questioned her motivations for coming forward. The witness remained composed, responding, “I stayed silent because I was afraid. I’m speaking now because I’m not.”
Several more witnesses are expected to take the stand over the coming days. The trial is anticipated to run through early July, with dozens of witnesses and a large body of physical and digital evidence set to be presented.
