James Artissen: From Queens to Grammys — A Multi-Hyphenate Creative Building New Worlds Through Music and Beyond
When you’ve built a career that stretches across songwriting, production, performance, acting, and sports management — people tend to ask how you do it all. For James Artissen, the answer lies in a seamless blend of passion, discipline, and vision. The Grammy-winning artist and CEO of Humble Sound Records has cultivated a sound and brand that defies boundaries, and he’s just getting started.
In this exclusive Exposed Vocals interview, we talk to James about his early inspiration from Michael Jackson, the creative heartbeat behind his music, and what’s next on the horizon for this powerhouse creative.
Exposed Vocals: James, you’ve built such a prolific career across multiple industries. When did you first know that music was your calling?
James Artissen:
Interestingly enough, I have always been around music since a very young age, but it didn’t really hit me to become a musician until I had the opportunity to meet Michael Jackson — who was, and still is in my opinion, the greatest of all time. At that moment I realized, at age 11, that music would be my profession. I didn’t know exactly where I would fit in just yet, but I would figure that out as time went on. Eventually, I started indulging myself in the art of songwriting, which later turned into music production to form full songs.
Exposed Vocals: You’ve worked as a producer, artist, songwriter, and even an actor. How do you balance wearing so many creative hats?
James Artissen:
To me, all of those roles go hand-in-hand. I really can’t have one without the other. But I’m also an advocate of teamwork — I bring in certain individuals to help execute the vision instead of wearing all of the hats at once myself.
Exposed Vocals: Tell us about your role as CEO of Humble Sound Records. What’s the mission behind the label, and how has it evolved?
James Artissen:
I started the imprint because I’ve always seen myself not only running my own label but giving a home to artists and creatives that I believed had the potential to be great. I want to let them flourish in their art without being held back.
My vision is to grow this brand into the first-choice destination for artists — a safe space where they can release their work into the world in the best way possible.
Exposed Vocals: From Queens to the world—how has your upbringing influenced your approach to music and business?
James Artissen:
There have been so many artists I’ve admired throughout the years, but the ones that truly stuck with me were: A Tribe Called Quest, Whodini, Kanye West, Dru Hill, Michael Jackson, and so many others.
I’ve always taken inspiration from what’s around me, which has given me an advantage because I never felt limited to just one box or genre. Coming from Queens, New York, the aura, style, and energy of the city inspired me to be as creative as possible — with no expectations or constraints.
Exposed Vocals: You’ve earned a Grammy and collaborated with some incredible names. Which moments in your career so far have meant the most to you?
James Artissen:
My journey hasn’t been the most structured or typical path to success. There have been highs and lows, and some very unorthodox situations that led to big opportunities.
I remember having sessions with Justin Bieber and several other artists that allowed me to thrive at that time. All of those moments helped me gain respect and notoriety among my industry peers — and ultimately helped me earn prestigious accolades like the Grammy.
Exposed Vocals: What’s your process like in the studio? Do you start with a melody, a concept, or something else entirely?
James Artissen:
Most times, I start with melodies — that’s what locks in the creativity for me. From there, I build the puzzle and fall in love with the concept as it develops.
Exposed Vocals: As Co-Owner of a sports agency, what inspired the crossover into the world of athletics, and how does that part of your career reflect who you are?
James Artissen:
I saw it as a great opportunity to expand my brand into other avenues — including sports. My partner Steve Sharpe presented the idea to me, and together we developed the concept around Music and Sports Entertainment.
Exposed Vocals: Your Spotify and YouTube catalogs show a strong, evolving sound. How would you describe your musical style today?
James Artissen:
I would describe it as Progressive Music. I often experiment with sound and push the boundaries in every project I release. I’ve never been a fan of limiting myself to one style or genre.
Exposed Vocals: For up-and-coming artists and producers, what’s the most valuable piece of advice you’d offer from your own journey?
James Artissen:
Understand why you’re doing it. Once you figure that out, perfect your craft at the highest level so you can compete. But above all — believe in your work, no matter what.
Exposed Vocals: What can fans expect next from James Artissen — any new music, tours, or projects on the horizon?
James Artissen:
You can expect my debut album releasing in 2026, a new collaborative EP with Bigg Baggz, and a new solo James Artissen single coming very soon!
