Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
I grew up in the hood lol. South Toledo, Ohio off of Byrne Road, and anyone from Toledo knows that there is not much of an easy way out of a town like this where walking down the street you might trip over someone dead b/c they ODed. Or get robbed at gun point and dragged out of the car just trying to have a fun night on the town with your cousin. But yeah there are nice things about Toledo. The lights at the Toledo Zoo or The University. What made me decide to become and artist? I was born on this path and I had a lot of emotional support from my late Grandma Mimi, Sister Bitsy RIP and Mom, Dad, brother James and sister Jamie. In the words of Johnny Cash "You build on failure. You use it as a stepping stone. Close the door on the past. You don't try to forget the mistakes, but you don't dwell on it. You don't let it have any of your energy, or any of your time, or any of your space." Although I am hopeful that things are looking up with the completion of my new Album FREYJA set to be released the end of this summer 2018. I made it out alive and I am currently based in FL with connect to LA.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
You will get 100 no's before you get 1 yes. But all it takes is 1 yes to make it. Success isn't measured in my eyes with how much money you have in the bank. Its measured for me by trial and error and perseverance and then the money comes. So keep going and following your dreams, b/c without them we are merely hollow shells.
Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?
Omgosh ALLLLL the time. But I try to just pretend like it was a part of the performance and no one really notices at that point (or they do and they are just being nice lol) But either way; its practice, practice, practice, trial and error. Rome wasn't built in a day. Just keep on truckin baby.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?
I play a lot of shows actually and it can be very overwhelming at times getting started, Sound check is a big one for me. It has to be perfect.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?
I am working on Reason 10 and Ableton for my new album with minimal equipment. But I plan on building my own studio with a lot of preamps, keys and drum machines and I plan on hiring on more producers/Mixers and engineers.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
I swear by Independent promotion and music outlets like Tunecore and Distrokid. Also reaching out to other artists and working together in the local community is a huge plus to anyone trying to get exposure.
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?
Nine Inch Nails. I am a huge fan of Trent and his amazing sound and quality of music. He takes you on a ride. But also Amy Winehouse RIP bc of her powerhouse jazzy vocals and definitely Justin Timberlake, Beyoncé, Rhianna and Ed Sherran, Kid Cudi, Eminem, Kanye West, the list goes on and on; I can only pray that I am honored to be in the presence of such amazing talent one day.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Yes and yes. My New project FREYJA is at the core of my things to finish before the end of this summer 2018. We plan on making the announcement pretty soon here and its is a full length album with two sides. I am recording the meat and bones of the project at home in my studio with help from a few old friends. Its about my journey thus far and you can expect a combination of up beat dance tracks and slower more melodic abstract pieces that I hope will make you think. Very Jazzy, bluesy fun.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
I would be finishing my degree and spending a lot of time with my family. I also love science so I might go back to school for Physics and Biochemistry. I also want to go to Africa and donate my time, which I plan on doing all of this anyway after this album is released while touring.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in the next year or so?
LOTS OF SHOWS, NEW MUSIC, and a few collaborations!!! I plan on making the trek back out to Hollywood to audition for some film roles, and to promote my new album FREYJA.
Exposed Vocals: Any Shout-outs?
