I’m an 18 year old artist. I’ve been weiting for about 4 years. I have a lot of different styles and flows that I’ve tried to manipulate and use to my advance. I’d like to go far with music. I’d like to create a new sound that people can use to really understand music, and the emotions hat come with it. I want to make experiences. I want people to feel all my lyrics and all the sounds I use. This is more about them than me.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
UnderRated: As a kid, I grew up as an abstract thinker. I grew up in Millville, New Jersey. I became an artist because I feel like I have something different to offer to those who choose to listen. I became inspired by one of my close friends, T.Diz. He always inspired me and pushed me to try to spit, and once I did, I loved it and I ran with it.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
UnderRated: I came up with my name because when I started rapping I wasn’t great, just as anybody else. But the person I showed people I was, was not what UnderRated could always be. My name just goes to show people that I know that I’m gonna be underrated by this person, or the next, but no matter what, I will always try my hardest to prevail and strive.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
UnderRated: I personally like online music sharing. I mean, how did we all start? By putting our songs on YouTube or SoundCloud for free just for buzz. I think that’s how it should always be. Music should be free for everybody in my opinion
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
UnderRated: Never let anybody you encounter discourage you from your dream. If this is what you want, chase it forever, and be your own person while doing it.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
UndeRated: I usually get inspiration from the vibe that’s in the air. Sometimes I just think of different punch lines in my head that I know are heat, and I just end up having to write a verse.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
UnderRated: Currently, I don’t have a website. I use Twitter and Facebook frequently to spread my music.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
UnderRated: I’d spend it on studio time. I’d try my hardest to get in contact with Childish Gambino to work on some music. He was another inspiration of mine due to the fact that I can relate to him.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
UnderRated: Usually when I’m at events, and there’s a rap circle, I’ll hop in and spit. Usually people come up to me after, asking about new songs dropping, or asking about my soundcloud link.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
UnderRated: Right now, I have a few lyrical tracks in the making, a few party songs. I have so many ideas. I’ll also begin working on my newest mixtape, They Say Things Happen
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
UnderRated: I know I wanna do something with music no matter what
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
UnderRated: I wouldn’t call it juggling, I’d rather call it vibing. I just let things play out. The rest of my life is also involved in that flow. Of course crunch time is nessacary sometimes.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
UnderRated: Fans should expect a lot of different flows, a lot of different sounds, and a lot of versatility. I’m just trying to be original as possible.
