Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Royce J: I grew up In Kansas City, Missouri, I was born and raised in a big family in one house. I wasn’t really ever into music. My mother used to play a lot of old school songs that caught my attention when I was younger. My older brother played a lot of Gangsta songs that I would love to hear all the time. I would remember melodies and they replayed over and over in my head. I saw others making music and I thought BIG. I began to do A LOT of research on equipment and how music is made. Saving money and began my career of rapping career in 2010. I was bashed because of my poor quality and lyrics back when I was younger so I went to beat making and got very well known. Throught the years In 2014 I returned back to recording songs and doing collaberations. Now everyone are on my Heels and love my music A LOT since I improved over time. Pretty much that’s when things got a lot better.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Royce J: I had MANY names I wasn’t comfortable with. 2010 It was Flight Jet, then Mafia, Then back to Flight Jet. 2014 It was JDavinci, And now its Royce J. I thought of this because my Dream In the future is to buy a matte black Rolls Royce. J s obviously because my first name is Jordan.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Royce J: I ALWAYS give away my music for free (For now). I want as much as Publicity as possible. I want the attention. I want to go to places and people just automatically notice who I am and give my music good feedback. But I also believe in people paying for music since nowadays users are downloading music for free which I feel isn’t very fair. Artist work very hard to get to a HIGH position and I feel they should be paid off for all the hard work, blood, sweat, and tears they have went through. But every once in a while free music isn’t bad at all.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Royce J: Promote as much as possible but PLEASE have limitations. People do NOT like spammers at all MOSTLY If it is not ready. Quality is EVERYTHING I promise you that. Get known in your city, and anywhere else as much as you can. Artist are coming out with their own style a lot nowadays, it just takes the right music to catch the publics ears. A lot of young crowds like music you can turn up to, and get mellow and slowly vibe to. That’s where its all at. Mainly create something similar that’s Popping in the industry, but keep your OWN style as well once you’ve feel you have found your style.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Royce J: Kevin Gates, madeintyo, and Southern Trap Music. Usually I don’t listen to music before I make my own songs. Im pretty sure I’ve found my own style.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Royce J: Ohhh you know the Usual. Soundcloud, Youtube, Facebook, Twitter, Pinterest, LinkedIN, google+
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Royce J: Im young, I’ll do a little spending on clothes, jewelry. The rest will be put towards Investing into the Studio.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Royce J: I promote my music on whatever I can get my hands on to. Anything that’s popping and anything I come across.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Royce J: Not really. My team is deciding to release a Mixtape soon. No MAJOR projects are going on. We just hope this Mixtape
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Royce J: Probably be working a 9 to 5. Also get into Acting but I want to even do that now.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Royce J: Im actually sacrificing right now. I don’t even work just so then I can work on music everyday since Im in school now but Im relying on this music to pop off and get me somewhere higher than what Im expecting. Well just have to keep grinding, keep working hard and getting ourselves out there to the public and wait to see the outcome.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Royce J: New style of Music that is going to attract A LOT of ears. No one really came up out of Kansas City, Missouri as a Young artist except for Rory Fresco. Hopefully well be up next to make it!
