Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

 

Psycho: I grew up in a big township called Evaton, in South Africa. I moved to a place called Simunye which means “We are One”                when i was about 4 years old. At the age of 5, my little sister was born. I lived in Simunye for until i was about 8 years old, then i moved to Ennerdale which is the place i currently live in. I’ve always loved music from a young age, but i was not a fan of Hip hop. I fell in love with hip hop after i have heard Eminem’s Lose Yourself, i fell in love with how he rapped and how he set the flow of the track. His music always sends out a message and in a creative way, the first 4 bars of that track are just killer. After i heard that track i told myself that  i want to do the same thing, i want to teach people about the way of God through music. Everyday my love grows for music, making good music that people can vibe to and being on a stage perfoming for a million of people is my dream.   

 

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

 

Psycho: My friend that i rap with gave me that name. Before i decided to go public with the name Psycho i went by the name of Red Mist. When my friend and i came up with with our group name we both decided to change our stage names, he decided to go by the name of “Sonic” because he raps fast. I was struggling to get my name and so my friend was like: “since you are a total maniac, how about you become Psycho”. And that is how i got my name.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

 

Psycho: Sharing music online gives your fans easy access to your music .Yes i do give my music away for free.I think giving music away for free is the best way to get your music to your fans.     

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

Psycho:

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

 

Psycho: God is my ghost writer, I pray before i write my bars. I listen to different types of genres because as a rapper you never know where you will get your inspiration from. The rappers that are an inspiration behind my music are J-Cole, Kendrick Lamar and Nasty C.  Usually when i write, i draw up a first draft then i correct it according to the vibe of the beat. After recording i listen to it and correct where i can.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

 

Psycho: No i don’t have a website but i upload my music on file hosting websites and i place the link on social media like twitter, Facebook etc.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

 

Psycho: Frankly i would build a home studio, i have no time for resting or taking a day off. I believe that the only time that a person should rest is when they die. Being an Indie rapper is quiet difficult and with so much money i would actually do things that will boost my rapping career. So taking a year off and balling is not what i would actually prefer to do, i would rather use that money to build a home studio, buy equipment for the studio and so on. 

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

 

Psycho: Social media helps me a lot. I post music links on different types of social media. Most of my friends send my music to their other friends so that way my music gets to a lot of people. My fan base is not that big but the people that listen to my music loves my music.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

 

Psycho: Well, I’m currently working on an EP Album, i won’t mention the name of the EP. This project is going to be big, i have a good feeling about it. Its going to be released later this year. You better watch out for it. 

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

 

Psycho: I’m currently in grade 10 and I’m an A student, music is part of my life but becoming a Neurosurgeon is my future career. Being a Neurosurgeon is also my dream. What i know about the music industry is that you cannot do it forever, you should have a backup plan. I’m gonna be making music and finding my way to the top but on the side, I’m gonna study medicine. So if i wasn’t making music i would be dedicating my whole life to becoming a Neurosurgeon.  

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

 

Psycho: Having a schedule and knowing at what time you must do what is very important. I know at what time am i gonna go to the studio, at what time do i have to do my chores and so forth. I have a lot of responsibilities and sometimes i just get overwhelmed by them but I’ve learned that prioritizing your responsibilities is very important, its get you on track. I always make time for the important things in my life but school and music comes first.   

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?

 

Psycho: All i can say is that keep your eyes and ears open. I’m going to make waves this year, these other rappers are going to drown in them.
