Sean Roberson, also known as ‘Prototyp3’, is a Bronx native whose love for music is present in his beats. The story began with a PSP game and a dream. Playing Traxxpad for his PSP gave the dream some height. While others are listening to the lyrics of a song, He is the one being captured by the sound of the beat. Currently pursuing his music career full time, he’s able to express his creativity while making a living doing what he loves. His beats allow you to connect with the song on a deeper level, due to the emotion behind each production. He lists his major influences as AraabMuzik, Just Blaze and Swizz Beatz. Listening to Jay-Z’s hit song U Don’t Know from his album The Blueprint produced by Just Blaze is what inspired his dream of becoming a producer. “That song would always have me bob my head and ready to work”. Since having released over 10 EP’s on Soundcloud Sean’s determination, ambition and passion for music are what have helped him prosper in the music industry thus far.
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an Producer?
Prototyp3: Well, I grew up in the South Bronx area of New York in the early 90’s when hip-hop was at it’s peak. I was always more interested in the beats behind the lyrics & how they were created. I loved the intricacy of drums, and melodies coming together as one and wanted to learn how to do what these people were doing.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Prototyp3: Well it’s complicated, yet simple.”Prototype” as it’s pronounced, basically means “one of one”, meaning I’m the only one of my kind. Then again, the prototype is only the beginning, which gives it limitless potential. When you add those two components together, I’m a one of a kind individual with potential.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Prototyp3: I honestly don’t mind free music, it’s a chance for people to enjoy it without having to worry about the responsibility of paying, making the experience more comfortable for fans.In my opinion, online sharing has made music way more accessible to a fan base, which can actually help an artist build one as well, I give my music away for free because I want fans to completely enjoy the experience the same as I did.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local DJ’s or Producers looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Prototyp3: Use the internet with your talents. Reach out to people by releasing quality music and promoting it, The more consistency you have the more people will listen, share, wait for, and overall enjoy your music. Make your music with you and the fans in mind, making sure that not only you enjoy it, but they do as well.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather producing inspiration? What is your usual production process?
Prototyp3: I always have a beat or melody of some kind playing in my head. Once I decide it’s catchy enough, I go into action on my laptop, laying down whatever I hear playing in my head,
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Prototyp3: I’m actually in the middle of designing my website now. I use other platforms like, Soundcloud and Bandcamp as well as YouTube.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Prototyp3: I would tour around the world performing, ironically. I wouldn’t even take a break, I love music too much.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Prototyp3: I self-promote. It’s the way I’ve always done it, using my social media outlets. It’s the fastest and most immersive in my opinion, because you interact directly with fans.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Prototyp3: I actually have a lot of upcoming projects, but the one I want to talk about is called, “AlphaOmega”. It’s going to be epic, something immersive. I want to give my fans a story, an experience, and a journey all in one. I’m enjoying the creation & I’m sure the fans will enjoy listening.
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Prototyp3: Honestly, I don’t know. Music is my life, but if I had to choose, it’d most likely be graphic art. I just love the work that comes with making great posters, flyers and things like that.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Prototyp3: My mother always taught me that time management is key when you’re doing anything in life. I haven’t exactly mastered the craft of it yet, but I make time by giving myself deadlines. These deadlines help me space out the time that I have to share between music and my responsibilities.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Prototyp3: Fans should look forward to hearing a lot of releases. I feel like I have more of a story to tell and the best way I can tell it is through music.
