Exposed Vocals Interviews Mia Freya

Mia Freya is a New York based songwriter, guitarist and multi instrumentalist who spent her childhood in China and Japan. During her teenage year she lived in Manchester/UK where she immediately became infatuated with the music scene. Mia was influenced by bands such as The Stone Roses, The Verve, Oasis and the Libertines.
Her  Alternative, Rock, Indie and pop infused music speaks about life from a detached point of view,  “an almost amused point of view”. She likes to write lyrics that leave space for personal interpretation. “They can mean different things to different people”.
Mia has been trained in classical piano since early childhood but her true love is the guitar which she picked up all by herself. Her passion and expertise led her to become a guitar based songwriter. Furthermore she obtained a Pro Tools Operator certificate Pro Media for sound engineering school.

Some of Mia’s most recent titles include “Whatever Happened”,”The Invite”, “American Day”, and “Happiness”. She has worked with Bernhard Grobman, guitarist and composer (Melissa Etheridge, En Vogue, Salt-N-Pepa) who was the producer of her song “American Day’’, and The King’s Son (“I’M Not Rich”) with whom she is currently collaborating.

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

Mia Freya: I spent my childhood in Asia and my teenage years in England. My parents are both musicians and I was drawn to music since very little. It was only natural for me.

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

Mia Freya: “Mia” was from my Japanese name “Miya”. “Freya” was a name given by a mentor.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

Mia Freya: Yes. These days it’s only normal. That’s one of the most effective way to get your music heard by large amount of people.

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

Mia Freya: Write a really good chorus(or a really good tune if the song has no chorus for that matter). At least try to achieve that in songs you’re writing.

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

Mia Freya: That could be anything, anywhere! More often than not, other musicians’ work will take me to places that inspire me to write a new song. Usually I’ll have the chords figured out first then melody. Lyrics come last and I often struggle a bit more on that.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

Mia Freya: You can listen to my music on-
https://www.reverbnation.com/miafreya
and
https://m.soundcloud.com/mia-freya

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

Mia Freya: I will get my own recording studio built for sure!

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

Mia Freya: So far I’ve only done online,as we earlier talked about. That is the most convenient and prevalent one these days.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

Mia Freya: I’m working on a new song recently which hopefully will get recored soon. There are also a few musicians I met recently and we were talking about co-writing a song. Let’s see what happens!

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

Mia Freya: I might be drawing manga I think!

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

Mia Freya: Leading a busy life like everybody else, but I use my free time to do music instead of say playing video games or watching tv…Since that’s what I enjoy doing the most.

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?

Mia Freya: I’m putting out a new single soon this summer! And I should probably put myself on Spotify soon too!
