Exposed Vocals: How did you hear about Exposed Vocals? What made you decide to sign up?

Lizzie Spiral: I came across your page on Twitter you emailed me wanting to interview me. I wanted to sign up

in aid of getting exposure my band needs and to let people now what we do.

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

Lizzie Spiral: I grew up in Benfleet, Essex the youngest of 3 with a 20 year gap between me and my brothers.

My dad was a crane driver and my mum was a Provident representative so a typical working class

background. When my mum used to drive around in her job I used to often go with her, I met a lot

of funny characters along the way which gave me a lot of inspiration for the characters which I

create in my songwriting. Once or twice my mum had one of her customers babysit me while

she finished her round, maybe it was a way to pay back part of the debt the customer owed her!

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

Lizzie Spiral: Elizabeth ‘Lizzie’ is my second name and Spiral well I had a bit of a reputation of being a bit ‘mad’ when I was

at school, but in a good way so Spiral stems from my personality.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

Lizzie Spiral: I think its a great tool to use, don’t underestimate the power of social media! I love sifting through Soundcloud and hearing

some amazing stuff there is so much talent out there its somewhat scandelous they not being played mainstream.

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?Lizzie Spiral: The best piece of advice I was given was from Bill Gould of Faith No More. I messaged him on Facebook and I was over the moon he replied. He said do whatever it takes to get your music out there and gig. For now I’m building up a following and when were ready we will get out thereand give it all we’ve got.Exposed Vocals: Do you ever make mistakes during performances? How do you handle that?

Lizzie Spiral: Yes we only human after all. I really had the urge to pee during one performance so I had to stand on stage and cross my legs whilst

singing, it wasnt part of the act, it was real life.
Exposed Vocals: Do you tour? Anything interesting happen on tour that you think our readers would enjoy hearing about?Lizzie Spiral: No I haven’t as of yet we going to busk first and see what reaction we get.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

Lizzie Spiral: A lot of ideas come to me when I go for a walk. My mind is clear and my muse seems to activate.

One of my songs ‘Wired Wired’ is based on the school run. Cars up your backside, running late etc

its all a bit mental and I wanted to reflect that in the song. I write the lyrics whilst I’m making the music

usually.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?Lizzie Spiral: We have a page on Facebook ‘The Spiral Penguin Club’ where our tracks are sent and our latest news.
Exposed Vocals: What are some really embarrassing songs that we might find on your mp3 player?Lizzie Spiral: Im a sucker for 80s songs. I also love Fun Boy Three ‘The Lunatics Have Taken Over The Asylum.’ Its a clever song

and it reminds me of when my kids go mad at home.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?Lizzie Spiral: Id go in a studio and get my music professionally recorded and also buy a house.
Exposed Vocals: Any planned studio upgrades? What are you working with now?Lizzie Spiral: There are 3 of us in the band. We send bass lines, drums, guitars, vocals etc backwards and forwards and Exitpenguin whois in the band mixes it all and adds some magic dust to the songs.

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

Lizzie Spiral: We’ve done adds on Facebook which have attracted listeners and having our own page gets shared around which helps.

You just have to keep plugging, I swear my keyboard was glowing red from all the typing I was doing last week!
Exposed Vocals: If you could perform anywhere and with any artists (Dead or Alive) where and who would it be with? Why?Lizzie Spiral: I’d love to perform Download and Glastonbury. Also as a support act for Faith No More would be amazing as they are

big influence and would love to meet the guys in person.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?Lizzie Spiral : We going to keep on building up our online presence and go from there, Im also sending my music to other artistsin the industy in hope for some feedback and any opportunity that may arise from that.Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

Lizzie Spiral: I am really interested in health. My son has allergies so I am often researching into why the body behaves in this way.

If I had been better at maths at school I would of like to have been a doctor.

Exposed Vocals: Do you remember buying your first album? Who was it? What was going through your head?

Lizzie Spiral: A favourite one from my childhood was a 1993 compilation album. It had Freddie Mercury on there and some

great Old Skool dance. The music made me feel alive and I loved singing along to it. I spent most of my childhood

in my bedroom singing and dancing I lived in my own little world.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?Lizzie Spiral: Good question I often ask myself that one. Its can be quite hard at times but I slot everything in as best I can. The neighbours probably

think Im a bit Do-Lally when they hear the screeching coming from my living room but it could be worse. A good friend of mines sister

used to apparently open her bedroom window in the middle of the afternoon and then have extremely noisy sex with her husband. The

neighbours used to hear it when they were out in their gardens and complain but her sister just snapped back that they were jealous!

Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?

Lizzie Spiral: More music and hopefully some live performances, in the meantime I will keep sending my music over in the industry until they get sick of me.
