I’m killa trae kum from Orange tx aka fruit city. My music is a mix between rap, hip hop, n r&b. I’ve been doing music since middle school but I stop for a while now I’m back on the seen. Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Killa Trae: I grew up in a small town of Orange, TX a.k.a. fruit city. Well what made me become a artist is one of my childhood friends who still raps today named Yung Pooda. He got me into it when I was in middle school from their I took off.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Killa Trae: Well Trae was always my nickname its short for my last name. Before Killa it was a lot of names I tried, but I really wasn’t feeling. Also most of those names were being used on Youtube for other artist. So one day I was writing and I wrote this crazy verse and Trae Killa came out. So i flipped it around and there it is.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Killa Trae: I feel like online music sharing is a great way to get your music out there and a good way to network too. You start finding out how good you are and how good everybody else is too. I give a lot of my music out for free. I just want people to hear me doing something I love to do. I also want a bigger fan base and I like to touch people through my music too.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Killa Trae: I would say, don’t stop trying they have a lot of promoters doing shows, and they have a lot of websites doing gigs and radio airplay. So its really all up to u, and your research. Its a big world out herewith a lot of opportunities. There should be no reason for you not to shoot for the moon and the stars.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Killa Trae: Really I mostly get my inspiration for things that has happened in my life. Stories that we talk about and think about peacefully, or laugh until we cry. My writing process is that I start listening to a special playlist of music. That kind of clicks my brain to start working. Then I listen to the beat, pull out my thesaurus, and start to write.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Killa Trae: No website right now but im working on it. I use a couple like: Youtube.com, Soundcloud.com, Musicgorilla.com, and Reverbnation.com.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Killa Trae: I would probablyget two nice houses both equaling up to one hundred sixty thousand. Then buy some cars that equals up to a hundred thousand. Then put sixty thousand in stock share, maybe have a little fun probably throw ten thousand in the strip club, and save the rest.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Killa Trae: Well I promote a lot of my music through social media sites, or different music sites. But, one way I do promote is giving out my mixtapes and EP’s out for free.That works great Ive gotten a bigger fan base from doing that then anything else.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Yes, I’m actually hosting a mixtape with DJ Boogie Bang out of Indianapolis called, “Do It For The Cloud.” Also have two new EP’s coming soon one is, “The Antidote” and the other one is called, “Grizzly Season.”
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Killa Trae: Well there’s a couple of things. One of them is probably working in the plants, or going back to college.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Killa Trae: I just push myself all the time. With my music I’m very passionate at doing, and I have a big love for it. So I just do what it takes, if I have to stay up and do it all night to get my song right thats just what I’ll do.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Killa Trae: A lot of new material, Some new EP’s, and mixtapes. Also more performances, two of them is for SXSW. One is on March 13th at the Bayou Lounge in Austin, TX. The other one is on March 18th at the Cielo Nightclub in Austin, TX too. So I hope to see everybody out there showing your support.
