Exposed Vocals Interviews Echoes Through Eternity

Drastic changes in Echoes Through Eternity have occurred over the past year. Only two of the remaining original members are still with the band, with this being said,however,there has been some awesome new additions to the team.

We Are “ECHOES THROUGH ETERNITY” Starting out on 19th October 2014,following drastic changes in band members, ETE have performed throughout the Mother City(Cape Town), South Africa. Our debut performance took place on the 9th January 2015. We have also performed alongside many great SA Bands such as: The Fallen Prophets, Subject To Slaughter, Animus Fall and many other great bands that continue to tear up the local scene.

Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

Dillon: I grew up in a township known as Mitchell’s Plain,a largely coloured community about 32 km (20 miles) from the city of Cape Town,which is located in Southern Africa.
What made me decide to become an artist?
Growing up. The violence, the verbal abuse,the harsh lifestyle. It’s pretty mental when alcohol’s got the best of your parents. As a kid I always wanted to get out and explore the world, to disappear from all the negativity that usually took place within the community, being in the area that I was, troublesome, the constant mishaps,I hung on to someone whom I genuinely thought cared about my wellbeing. This person later deceived me,I just felt really frustrated and alone. I lost myself,and with that being said I decided to take a stand and shape myself.
I decided to share my story.

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

Dillon: “Echoes Through Eternity”? Pretty much speaks for itself,The screams. In 2014 the band was derived from myself,my drummer Imraan and Ex-Guitarists Jovan and Zayd. After a couple of practice sessions together at a local studio, we started putting together a bunch of possible names we thought we could use for the band,the majority voted “Echoes Through Eternity”.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give away your music for free? Why?

Dillon: Yes we do give our music away for free because when starting out no one really knows who you are and they’re not willing to pay for something they don’t know, so you give out as much free stuff as possible to gain attention and acquire more fans that way and when you are well established enough, you can start charging. Online music sharing is a great tool also for bands who want to setup an event where similar genres take place so through online sharing you can listen to and contact these bands for events.

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a startup once, can you give any smaller or local bands or Artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

Dillon: Yeah,keep putting yourselves out there. Don’t give up no matter what. Be persistent, be strong and don’t be afraid to ask around. Go in with all the confidence you have. You’ll never really know what you’re capable of doing until you at least give it a try. You have the ability to accomplish anything you set your mind to.

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

Dillon: My songwriting inspiration comes from the sea,it is around 10 minutes from where I live,so I’d often sit out on the docks or anywhere really and I’d just reminisce as I begin to write to the sound of the waves. The sharp smell of the salty waters allows me to think clearly, it all depends on the situation, I then blast the metal through my ears and I start to configure my lyrics.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

Dillon: No,we do not have a band website but that is one of the things we would like to accomplish before year end. The online platforms we currently make use of are Soundcloud, YouTube, Facebook and Twitter.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off,what would you do? How would you spend it?

Dillon: At this stage I’d use it to build my very own studio, I’d upgrade it to the best sound possible and spend my year experimenting in it. But being a year off and receiving half a million any other time? I’d invest some of it,as well as go out to see all my favorite bands perform live.

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

Dillon: Apart from social media I’d say posters or flyers and constant  gigging works most effectively because it is on stage where you broadcast your raw talent and put yourself up to the test, being the best you can be and having fun while you’re at it. Attracting an audience is really important, even though some may not like your music, they’re forced to listen to you. So you become the topic of their discussions,and still end up growing.

Exposed Vocals: So what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

Dillon: After the change in members, The band has been touching on some subgenres in metal and may make a change in the new album. My band (Echoes through eternity) are currently working on an EP  which will be done in the next  two months. We will then start promotion once it’s done and start looking at dates and venues for the launch.

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

Dillon: I’d be out in the working field, most likely be studying and slaving my way through life. I’d be focused on other talents that involves physicality.

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in life?

Dillon: I simply don’t. I’d just stay positive, giving attention to what is required of me to do 110%. Sure it is tough, but i prefer being calm about it, allowing life to take it’s toll.

Dillon: Epic live shows and awesome snippets of our transition as a band to a heavier sound.
