Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
D MAC: I grew up in Norfolk, Va. I decided to become an artist due to a lack of creativity & reality in hip hop today. People want to hear authentic and good sounds
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
D MAC: Dreams, Monogamy, and Cash, make the world go round. Despite me having an old soul, all 3 take a toll on me
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
D MAC: Online music sharing isn’t bad at all, the Internet is a everyday necessity nowadays. You discover blogs, promo etc. As far as giving it out for free, I do because this is my debut EP. Although a couple of my hits made the radio and paperwork was submitted, so I will be collecting residuals.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
D MAC: My message to artists across the world trying to get gigs & AirPlay is to handle the business side of your music first. Get your works registered through BMI, ASCAP etc. These companies see to it, that your royalties will come if played on the radio anywhere. But it’s up to those persons to take the time out to do so. As far as gigs go be patient and humble enough to do open mics and other small venues until you’re able to do better.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
D MAC: I wouldn’t say where, I’d say what and who. I listened to Tha Dogg Pound, 2Pac and Treach a lot as a child. After I heard, “The Chronic” I was insanely hooked. The funk derived beats gave me a rush like no other and the lyrics weren’t anything more than what I saw in/out of my house. I’m not writing to a song unless it’s platinum hit worthy! My process for songwriting depends on what the instrumental sounds like. Then again, I’m a great with words as some of my women friend tell me.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
D MAC: At this juncture, I don’t have a website of my own, but you can find me on Soundcloud by typing in my EP title, “Whoogothafunk”.
Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
D MAC: In this business, you don’t take time off you fall off, I can exclude myself in a way because I believe in making everlasting sounds, but never will I ever because that’s selfish to fans and arrogant towards your passion for the music. I would spend 500K very wisely. Mainly on high quality production equipment. Help those in need and take care of my loved ones.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
D MAC: I usually find ways to promote my music through verified blog sites and radio AirPlay. AirPlay works best for me because, you have so many people out there listening to your sound. All it takes is for that right ear/person to change your life. But I don’t depend on no one but myself!
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
D MAC: My next project, “Down 4 Tha Underground” will be out in the fall. With known VA producers such as myself, Lourd, Brooklyn Taylor, Yogaflame, Chris Prythm and Fake Uzumi. Nothing but underground funk and platinum hits coming. Stay tuned for that !
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
D MAC: If I weren’t making music, I’d still be trying my best to avoid a 9-5. Nothing but modern day slavery to me. I had the luxury of seeing what that had to offer and it’s not for me at all!
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
D MAC: This music is apart of my responsibility. I’m very responsible for bringing hip hop back and making sacrifices in order to survive on my work. It gets rough here and there, but my love for hip hop & opportunities like this keep me on my toes.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
D MAC: All my fans can definitely look forward to another phat EP, with more platinum hits to come. It’s just that simple. Whoogothafunk is one of the best EP’s you’ll hear from top to bottom, and able to sit on the charts with real hip hoppers!
