Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?

 

CosmicLocksmith:  I grew up in suburban NJ in the 80s.  I guess you could say that from an early age I had an attraction to both the strange and unusual as well as technology.  I was hugely influenced by heavy metal and punk cassettes.  Two things: when the film Blue Velvet cane out and when i heard The Cure’s Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me that really got me set towards experimentation in poetry, film, and music.  In addition the 90s rave and drum and bass scene was hugely influential.

 

Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?

CosmicLocksmith:It comes from an actual business name.  It seemed to fit like a key in a lock.

Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?

CosmicLocksmith:I do this to share and also to just reflect back whats in my sphere of influence so I’m ok with sharing for free.  That’s not to say I wouldn’t want the ability to make art for a living.

Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?

CosmicLocksmith:  I actually have just about no experience with this. However I have one word to share that seems to be somewhat absent these days. . . mystique.

 

Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?

 

CosmicLocksmith:  usually I will come up with either the basic synth part first or the rhythm part then wait a few days, listen back then mix down with live improv.

Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?

 

CosmicLocksmith:  i would take my wife and i on a trip to specific places where we could do field recordings.  Then I would hire studio musicians and studio time to produce a concept album with a statement about ________.

Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?

 

CosmicLocksmith:  social media helps.

Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?

 

CosmicLocksmith:  the future is unwritten.

Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?

 

CosmicLocksmith: dharma practice, reading, writing.

Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?

 

CosmicLocksmith: dharma practice, genius and loving wife, go to work, try to stay out of trouble.
