Exposed Vocals Interview Meg Skyler
Exposed Vocals: So tell us your story. Where did you grow up? What made you decide to become an artist?
Meg Skyler: I grew up in Pretoria, South Africa. I’m still staying in South Africa, but it’s my dream to move to LA and sing internationally. I started vocal lessons at the age of 10. I’ve always wanted to be a artist, but the first time I acually really realized that it’s the perfect road for me to take, was in the beginning of 2015. I guess something just changed and my eyes started opening and I knew exactly what path to take.
Exposed Vocals: How did you come up with that name? What was your inspiration behind it?
Meg Skyler: Well, I always loved the name Skyler, so I decided on Meg Skyler. No one has ever used the name. I didn’t want to use Megan because it’s really common and I have a few friends called Megan.
Exposed Vocals: What do you think about online music sharing? Do you ever give your music away for free? Why?
Meg Skyler: I’m releasing my Debut single in June called “Beat In My Heart” so I’m really excited. I always give any new music I made to my family and close friends at no cost. Since they support me so much. As for online sharing- it’s the only thing I really count on at the moment, and it helps me get my music out internationally.
Exposed Vocals: Since everyone was a start-up once, can you give any smaller or local bands or artists looking to get gigs and airplay some tips?
Meg Skyler: Don’t go looking for a record label, they’ll come to you. Even though I haven’t been signed to one yet, this is the tip I got from many bigger artists. But the best advice I have is don’t give up! Even if you don’t alwayss come first, different people have different taste.
Exposed Vocals: Where do you usually gather songwriting inspiration? What is your usual songwriting process?
Meg Skyler: Anywhere, I think of lyrics and beats at the weirdest times, for example:
When I’m busy with my school work, I grab a pen and my songwriting book and then I write them down.
Even something as simple as a flower can give me inspiration, but I can’t say it’s easy writing a good song.
Every song I write, I write in a different way, sometimes the beat first, sometimes the lyrics first.
Exposed Vocals: Do you have a band website? What online platforms do you use to share your music?
Meg Skyler: I have Instagram which I’m pretty sure I’m on 24/7. I don’t have a website yet but my website is currently in process.

Exposed Vocals: If you were given half a million dollars and a year off, what would you do? How would you spend it?
Meg Skyler: I would probably use it to move to LA because I’ve always wanted to do that, Buy some sweets, and make a lot of original music. I’d also build my own recording studio since I love creating music and making music videos. I’d help people reach their dreams and help the less fortunate.
Exposed Vocals: How do you find ways to promote your music? What works best for you?
Meg Skyler: Youtube, Twitter, Facebook and the best one Instagram. It’s the most popular platforms I would definitely recommend them.
Exposed Vocals: So, what’s next? Any new upcoming projects that you want to talk about?
Meg Skyler: Definitely, I have a song coming after “Beat In My Heart” called “If I Lost My Memory” it’s a sad song and personally the best slow song I’ve wrote so far. I think a lot of people can relate to it. I’m also working on releasing my EP at the end of the year. I am excited about my “Beat In My Heart” Music video
Exposed Vocals: If you weren’t making music, what would you be doing?
Meg Skyler: Wow, that’s a tough question, but I would probably go into music video production , I love editing videos or I would become a Full Time Youtuber.
Exposed Vocals: How do you juggle the rest of your responsibilities while trying to stay ahead in your music life?
Meg Skyler: I’m graduating next year which means it’ll be easier but for now I’m trying to work hard so I can graduate, I believe everything happens for a reason and I take as much as possible of my free time and spend it on my music.
Exposed Vocals: What should fans look forward to in 2016?
Meg Skyler: Definitely for some EPIC music! I have a lot of music and music videos coming soon, and some really cool original songs. Though I can’t give everything away, it’s a Mystery – you never know. All I know is, this is going to be a EPIC year and I can’t wait to share everything.
